Motherofpearl Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 I guess we only talk about gibsons here my bad
Hogeye Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Beautiful guitars. Thank you. I'm not a big fan of the small body guitars but this one is amazing. I remember meeting Greg Boyd for the first time in Bozeman. He was a salesman selling fasteners. You know nuts and bolts. He stopped in at Gibson and they became a big customer. Gibson was just getting it's tooling going and Greg helped them a bunch. Greg was always interested in music and soon became a Gibson dealer in Missoula. He was actually Gibson's biggest dealer in the early 90's. That is when he became acquainted with Kevin and John Walker. Greg kept his connection with them for all these years and is a big supporter of them. He is no longer a Gibson dealer. That was a decision of Gibson's then marketing director. Another in a long line of unwise decisions made at Gibson over the years. The girl is lovely and I really enjoyed the original song. This is just a small piece of history of the mistakes Gibson has made over the years. They let Kevin,John,Ren,and Greg all slip away. The people they let go went on to make music history. It's amazing the ammount of tallent Gibson has just walked away from.
Motherofpearl Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 Hogeye I didn't know Greg was a gibson dealer at some point. That's all alot of great info. May I ask if Kevin and John walked away on their own terms or was it the other way around? I agree a great original and I think kevin really voices hi guitars with a great vintage tone. I'm really hoping for a trail boss still in talks and saving.
Yggdrasil Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 mistakes - these as noted below... and blowing the Jorma Sig. I have a Kopp NL prototype and had a Walker Clark Fork, a fantastic guitar - nut width just a bit too narrow on mine, though, so I had to let it go. Beautiful guitars. Thank you. guitarstrummer Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Kevin makes great guitars. We were able to tour his shop during the last Gibson Homecoming and it's also on our schedule of events for the next Homecoming.

Motherofpearl Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 Maybe it was eir. Natural top?
Phelonious Ponk Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I haven't been in touch with him for years, but John Greven used to make some awfully nice Gibsonesque guitars as well. I had a maple/adirondack OOOO here for awhile that was a great guitar. P
Yggdrasil Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Maybe it was eir. Natural top? No mine was burst. there was a nat top Wise River on Toronto Kijiiji though.
EuroAussie Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 The L-02 sounded fabulous, loved it .... the other one, less so.
Motherofpearl Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 I agree EA. the K35 doesn't shine in the video. I just put it up as comparison as both were the same players and shop.
Motherofpearl Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 One I seen was a natural top Clark fork. Thought it was in Ontario but I could be wrong.
Hogeye Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Hogeye I didn't know Greg was a gibson dealer at some point. That's all alot of great info. May I ask if Kevin and John walked away on their own terms or was it the other way around? I agree a great original and I think kevin really voices hi guitars with a great vintage tone. I'm really hoping for a trail boss still in talks and saving. In 1992 Greg was Gibson/Montana's biggest dealer. He was selling over $100K a year and that was a lot back in the day.In 1993 Gary Burnett from Bee Thee Vintage outsold Greg by a few thousand to become the biggest dealer. Both dealers were then cut off by Gibson's brilliant marketing director. Kevin will tell anyone that asks that he and the same marketing director mentioned above had artistic differences as well and Kevin was given the opportunity to further his personal career. It was nothing involving Kevin's work ethic it was about Kevin and Ren furthering the Montana Custom shop and the politics of them gaining too much notoriety. This will only fuel the need to answer more questions. I won't do that here. John Walker decided he had enough of the corporate world and left on his own terms. I'm sure that the same can be said for Ren and Dan Roberts. Dan is not as widly known as Kevin and John but he was the plant manager at Gibson before moving on to Santa Cruz and Richard Hoover. Dan and his son-in-law Marcus Engstrom are making a real name for themselves as top luthiers. There is no better repairman than Marcus.Marcus did the neck reset on my Brazilian AJ and it is amazing. One of the big reasons for coming to the Homecoming is to have Marcus do a set-up on your guitar while you are in town. Call early as he is very busy. I agree on the Trail Boss. As soon as someone steps up and buys my Ray Whitley I will put one on order. After that I will get a John Walker J-35. I will get the Trail Boss from the great folks at Music Villa and the Walker J-35 from my good friend and old pal Greg.
Motherofpearl Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Wow! Seems like alot of politics. Marcus engstrom is MVs repairman am I right? Also I did not know music villa sold walker and kopps guitars. Thanks for all the info it's appreaciated
