Songs with nonsense lyrics

Rabs

Recommended Posts

I think theres many many songs out there where the lyrics are just nonsense.. They could be great songs still but the words just go with the great music rather than having much meaning (not saying that's a good or bad thing)..

What are the songs you think that are just jibberish :) and do you think it matters? Should every song have a meaning?

This is a great song, but I think even Plant himself has said he wished that hed written better lyrics for it.. Whats funny about it is that if you don't really listen Plant makes them sound more meaningful than they actually are.

And this is one of those songs that is just bad.. but the lyrics are even worse :) (but it charted in its time)

Just about any song by Steely Dan, esp from the 70s- seems I read someplace that they didn't care about lyrics, just about the music and arrangements, the lyrics were there just to keep the song going. They even made a point of writing lyrics that made no sense.

[unsure]

One of my all time favorite "crazy lyrics" songs:

LOVE IT! [biggrin]

But, The Beatles were as famous, for "fun/funny/weird" lyrics,

as they were for more meaningful ones.

CB

Makes perfect sense to me... kooo kooo cathchooo :P =P~ \:D/

Indeed, CB! Nonsensical and humorous lyrics abound—especially during the Magical Mystery Tour & Yellow Submarine era:

Rabs "Unskinny Bop".... one of the most horrendous songs ever. Lyrics, riff, guitar playing...all just awful [rolleyes]

Jeff-7 I never did understand any lyrics by STP. Music good but I have no idea what Scott is talking about :-k

One for me that comes to mind is Beck's "Loser". Not sure what it means, but I love the line

"and my time is a piece of wax, falling on a termite....who's chokin' on the splinters..." B)

Do you bad lyrics, or nonsense? Bad would be anything by Kiss, and nonsense would be say Loser by Beck

Mostly nonsense lyrics :) ones that literally make no sense.. BUT bad lyrics can be even worse, at least when they are nonsense its up to the listener to make of that what they will.. But bad lyrics are just usually cheesy and or lazy :)

Neither did Scott, he's always out of his mind on smack. The Deleo brothers are rad, I like Scott's voice but his lyrics are usually garbage.

The Bonzo Dog Band were notorious for having songs with incredibly whacked out titles and lyrics. Such as "My Pink Half Of The Drainpipe","Rhinocratic Oaths", "You've Done My Brain In","Noises For The Leg","Mrs. Slater's Parrot" and one particularly mad song with a not so strange title but the lyrics put you in very real danger of emptying your bowels in your clothes, the song is simply called "Tent".

A couple of members of the Bonzos released solo albums that were just exercises in madness and mayhem-especially Viv Stanshell who gained a lot of public exposure by introducing all of the instruments in Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" his album was called "Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead" and one of the songs "How The Zebra Got Its Spots" is a hilarious tale of how every night spots got on the striped pajamas of a boy going through puberty-you can gather how that came to be I imagine. Neil Innes of the Bonzos did an album called "How Sweet To Be An Idiot" and sang the title song at Monty Python Live at The Hollywood Bowl and Monty Python "Live At Drury Lane".He was a founding member of The Rutles and also the main songwriter. He also has appeared in Monty Python movies and was Sir Robin's minstrel in Holy Grail and he wrote and the song about "Brave Sir Robin's Retreat".

It would take an hour or more to list the strange titles of songs they sang.Frank Zappa also wrote some pretty way out lyrics and titles too.

Two songs from the summer of 1966 fit the weird lyrics category really well, they are: "I love onions" by whom I completely forgotbut it was a girl with a cutesy Marilyn Munroe breathy type of voice and another doing a pretty good send up of Julia Child. The other mad song was"They're coming to take me away" by I Was Whistling Bill's Batman I believe the name was.Anyway both were great songs but the latter was absolutely nuts and the flip side was really out to lunch because it was the A side played backwards.

"Clones" the great song by Alice Cooper from the Flush the Fashion CD is probably suitable for inclusion there too.
