How about songs with the MOST meaningful lyrics

So how about the songs with the most meaningful or clever lyrics...

Now I know this will be different for everyone as we all connect to different things... also this can depend on what your situation in life is... but there are some songs where the lyrics just hit home...

this is just a GREAT tune with an amazing performance and a subject matter most of us can relate too.. But Prince can sure write some good tunes [thumbup]

Oh, Man...you're right, there are a LOT!

One, for me...

Especially poignant, these days...

And, another one: And a great version of it, as well!

Yeah both great tunes.. Talk of Eric Clapton.. When ever I hear this one it gets me as I know its about his late son.

OK, this is not a sad one, but what about the serious problems of musicians on the road struggling for success?

Please note the very special axe of the watchman. [biggrin] It predates the limited Gibson Reverse Flying V by about 25 years.

[thumbup] both lyrically simple but both so effective and straight to the point.. if they hadn't made those songs, someone would have :)

That's an interesting point...and, a kind of "what if" (they hadn't)...would someone else???!

Maybe, but then again, maybe not. That was kind of their "genius," in a way.

It's easy to imagine someone else could have, when it's already been done. [biggrin]

You are so right. For me it's Phil Collins It's In Your Eyes. And the Beatles In My Life.

OK, one of my contributions above dealt with troubles specific for musicians, another one was rather sad, and the next is a rather serious take on our society. Listening to the lyrics written and sung by Gordon Sumner aka Sting can make believe as if time had stood still for more than thirty years. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain, and the end of the Cold War obviously haven't changed the very troubles substantially. OK, my business trips to Berlin became much easier, but now they don't seem able to accomplish the BER airport there.

Sadly no moving pictures, but HQ sound here:

"Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix is always hailed as probably being the most incendiary live guitar performance of all time but it is much more than just that, the lyrics of Machine Gun are among the most profound lyrics to protest the needlessness of war.At the time the Vietnam War was in full swing but there was also fighting in the streets of the US spurred by racial tension and all over the world pro and con Vietnam War protesters were clashing in the streets. Jimi mentioned this when he introduced the song by mentioning all the soldiers fighting in "Chicago,New York.... and all the soldiers fighting in Vietnam". He once said words to the effect of "When the Power of Love replaces the love of power-only then will we know peace." I used to know that verbatim-getting old does that to you.

Donovan also wrote some pretty profound lyrics as far back as his first album with his anti Vietnam dirge "The War Drags On" and he also wrote songs that were commentaries of how the world is going much too fast with songs like "People Used To","Get Thy Bearings","Essence to Essence" and even with his very controversial "Poke At The Pope" which quite understandably raised a few hackles to say the least.

"Get Together" by The Youngbloods was one of the earliest songs to comment on how the world was getting to be a harder place to live in due to people not connecting with each other either on a personal or international level.
