Searcy
Picked this up over the weekend. It's a 100% original 1974 Thomas Organ California Cry Baby. I was shocked that it still had all its original parts so I snatched it up for that price. This is the second one of these I have now. The other one has a new AB pot and Im thinking of adding a DC power jack to it now that I have two.

L5Larry
Im thinking of adding a DC power jack to it now that I have two. I have one from the same era, and installed the Dunlop A/C conversion kit years ago. I find mine to be quieter under D/C power, but the convenience of the wall wort operation also has it's merits. Kind of still on topic..... How do you put a mfg date to a Cry baby of this era, mine was given to me "used" sometime in the early/mid '70's. Searcy
If it's still got the original pot in it (a rare thing) you can date it with the pot date. The 4th and 5th digits in this code are the year of manufacture. The last two digits are what week of the year it was made. I think I have 9 or so wah pedals now and tone wise these are my favorites. surfpup
Score! I assume you don't buy into the 5103 inductors suck hype?
Searcy
Score! I assume you don't buy into the 5103 inductors suck hype? I always trust me ears. I'm a huge Micheal Schenker geek and these early 70's TDK Cry Baby pedals are what he used on those early UFO records. They sound great! Perhaps not as quacky as the Fasel and stacks o' dimes inductors, but smoother. I got rid of one years ago, and I wish I had it back. Gotta find me a deal like yours. Curently I have 7 Cry Baby pedals including these two Thomas Organ modles, a DimeBag Daryl Cry Baby from Hell (CFH), a Jimi Hendrix "Original Thomas Design" a GCB100 and a few CGB 95s. Most of them for less that $40 at junk stores. The CFH is the most versatile by far but I still like the smooth tone of the old TDK units best. kaleb
Being a massive Schenker fan, I too love this era of Cry Baby. All I ask out of a wah is to have a good sweep, not too narrow, not too wide, good midrange (as half the time I just notch it), and good preservation of the low-end. I'm sorry, but the standard issue Dunlop Cry Baby of today just doesn't cut the mustard.

bonzoboy
You really got a steal on that Cry Baby because pre-Dunlop Cry Babies are constantly increasing in value.I have an Italian made Jen Cry Baby and just as the California made ones the sound of them is markedly different and far superior to the current Dunlop Cry Babies,in fact the current cheaper Vox pedals sound closer to the original Cry Babies than the Dunlop models.Congrats on your great bargain...enjoy. BTW: The current Dunlop Cry Baby wahs sound and perform much better with the pot that Vox uses in their Handwired wah wah pedal.I could never find a suitable replacement pot for my old Vox Clyde McCoy that came anywhere close to the original pot until I ordered the pot that they used in the Handwired Vox wah from Korg Canada. The handwired wah pot gave the old Clyde the exact tone of the original pot and now after over 25 years the old Clyde sounds and performs as it did when new so I'm sure that it would vastly improve the performance of the Dunlop wah. L5Larry
Just checked the pot code on my old Cry Baby - 1976.
Californiaman
Well now I'm going to have to check my Thomas Organ Co. Cry Baby Wah. I know it's from the 70s from the back plate, it says Sepulveda, CA. I'll check the pot just to be sure.
CoreyT
Very cool! I have a Thomas Organ one as well that I got brand new probably '73 or '74, cannot remember the exact year :D Have not seen it in eons, it is at my sisters house in storage for around the last 15 years. Guess I should go get it sometime, but I hate to see what it is like, as it probably has a 9V battery in it still. It was in perfect shape except for a little scratchiness form a dirty pot.
