ann Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I have a solid Ebony Invader I purchased new in the 80's (please don't ask for an exact date) - - and I LOVE it. It's a tad heavy now that I'm a getting up there in the years - but it's very solid and the tone is nice - stays in tune well - great neck - (bolt on but hey - I don't care). Twin humbuckers.... what's not to love - she can be sweet or she can GROWL on demand - need I say more?
ksdaddy Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 In the early-mid 80s Gibson tried to have some models in the low price range. They seem to be fine guitars although some would turn their noses up at them beause of the bolt on necks. Invader, Challenger, Sonex, all somewhat similar. I heard that some necks were made in Japan but have no idea if it's true.
DestructorsKillMusic1982 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I have some of the more-affordable Norlin-era guitars (Sonex, Marauder, "The Paul"), you will most likely find on the bottom of some of the hardware such as the bridge that it is stamped "Made in Japan". While they are not popular among some Gibson purists for their bolt-on necks and other features that are uncharacteristic for Gibson (especially my Marauder, which is an early model from '75 with a maple neck and is almost Fender-like at times), I love mine and wouldn't part with them even though I do have other more expensive and traditional Gibsons. And at $200, my Sonex was the cheapest Gibson I've ever bought.
sa278 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Hi guys, I recently found a '84 Gibson Invader (silverburst). I was hoping for yall's input since Gibson was rather useless on the phone. 1. I would like to install locking tuners (grovers, schallers, doesn’t matter)….are any of you aware of a drop in part/model number? I don't want to drill into the headstock. 2. What kind of pickups are in it? I can’t find much info other than some people saying Dirty fingers and others saying Sonex 180.....i bought some Gibson '57s, do yall think these would work well? Thanks a lot and hopefully someone can help me out.
