Anyone in N. Cal. who is in the market for one of these.....It was great looking and great sounding, and I generally don't even like Maple sounding guits. However this one was sweet. I played blues, strummed, finger style, it can do it all!!!!! I thought to myself, THIS would REALLY record well.....just a great guitar if interested!

The TV's are lovely, I bought an SJ200TV myself, cracking guitar..... big, bold, a bit flashy, crazy sound. I do however think after the price increase last year / this year they go awfully pricey. Glad I got mine at a decent price, probably wouldn't have paid the higher amount.

In Praise of the SJ200... I have a 2004 'standard' which was the only version available before the TV line was added. I was concerned it would eventually start sounding loud but thin, jangly without depth - after I developed an ear for it compared to other guitars. The opposite is true. Whether fingerpicking or strumming or using a pick - it has character in each and every note. Slides, hammering on - everything comes across great. For the first few years I kept waiting for it to sound "Taylor-esque" and give me an excuse to dump it and find a new, true love. Hasn't happened and I'm 100% convinced at this point, it never will. So - all of you kicking the tires or gassin' or somewhere in between - consider there's a good reason this model - in the traditional maple - has stood the test of time.

Not a lot of talk about the 200's in here. Just thinking that its probably the least mentioned in the forum and yet , if the j45 could maybe claim the most iconic, then the j200 must be a damn close second.

Maybe no one ever has any trouble with them and are too busy playing them :)

I'd love one myself

Dunno man, it seems some models go through a wee spell of popularity, I remember last year (I think) and there were successive NGD's posted about (S)J200's, TVs and Stds....

If I remember well at the time, there seemed to be quite a few of us were 200 owners. Definitely cool guitars.... which reminds me, it's probably about time I rotated which one sits out in the lounge... think I'll have the 200 out for a while.. 45's been out for ages, probably my most used guitar.

Ahaa..thats where i would disagree with ya BBG.

For me, the j45 maybe the mostly widely used and Gibsons biggest seller.. but there are plenty of othe guitar makers that can basically knock out the LOOK of a J45...Collings spring to mind..and many others

Most people on the street could not name the model of a J45...or an SJ 200 but

The Hummingbird for me if The Iconic Gibson Guitar

no one else can make anything like it really... and not many will even attempt a red guitar...I'd bet a hell of a lot more ppl could name the Hmmingbird, than a J45

for me anyway..even tho they have only been around sinsec the 60's..the Hummingbird will always be the most recognised and beautiful Gibson there is :)

Nice J200!

I'll be in Napa in October, already planned a visit to Gryphon's. Are there any other stores in the area I should have on my radar? Time will be limited but I'd like to hit a few stores while in Northern CA.

Be sure to hit Eric Schoenberg's in Tiberon: http://www.om28.com

Guitar showcase in San Jose: http://www.guitarshowcase.com

Be sure to bring your American Express.....don't leave home without it!

I'd highly recommend you visit Santa Cruz, beautiful little town on the ocean. Visit Sylvan Music while your

there and if you're interested, take a tour of Santa Cruz guitars which is located a couple of miles from

Sylvan.

The H'Bird is certainly more recognize able due to the tie in branding of the pick guard with the name. Jonas Brothers and Justin Beiber phot ops with it probably increased its recognizability a hundred fold among the younger generation. They show up more often than J200s and J45s at the Country Music Award type shows because they're purdy. I have an H'Bird and I love it. But, when you get past the icon measure, the J200s seem to me to be preferred for studio and stage. Of course, that's a general observation with no scientific proof. Between the two and a J45, I would not throw any of them out of bed. The SJ200 just seems to be more versatile.

.

Great looking J-200 TV and quite the positive review Wily. That one's priced not much more than the MAP on a new Standard. Tempting.

Regarding iconic Gibson's - I'm thinking the guitars with easily identifiable individual characteristics - J-200, H'bird, Dove. The J-45 is very popular, but finish, cosmetics, and pickguard wise, looking very plain. My personal pick - J-200.

Jeepers fellers, maybe its wax build up in my ears, but the clip of that J-200 sounded a bit jangly and filed with string buzz? [blink] Just finished up playing my J200, trying to learn some John Denvery type stuff, and its presence is quite a bit bolder than that clip. As far as status symbol Gibsons go, I'd have to side with the classic Les Paul, and the gawdy looking J-200, as perhaps the most easily recognized boxes.

Dan...lol...I didn't even listen to the web example....just my store experience.....in the store, it was amazing....like butter......just a great sounding guitar, I was even thinking..." Hmmm, maybe the will take my SJ-200 Koa in trade????"....and my Koa sounds pretty good....Plus, I wasn't playing that "Cowboy" stuff on it, just a really smoth guitar...
