Dr. Gibs:

My best thoughts and especially prayers for you--especially that your surgeons and attending staff will be the best.

I had a surgical decompression of my AC joint. Much better now than before the surgery. As Anne wrote it's important to use the joint as soon as your doctors say it's okay.

The rehab is a bear: it's a complicated joint as you know. The key for me was to ensure that I took the pain med about 45 mins before physical therapy so that I could do the exercises with the minimum amount of pain.

You've got an advantage I didn't have: Gibson physical therapy.

I look forward to hearing you post some post-surgery pickin'.

MrGibs, best of luck. I live in a ski town so I've seen and been through a lot of injuries over the years. What I've learned that is most important is to DO YOUR REHABILITATION EXACTLY AS YOUR PHYSICAL THERAPIST TELLS YOU TO, NO MORE AND NO LESS. A lot of A-types try and speed up the process and just hammer away on themselves and make the recovery longer or even make the problem worse. Lazy people don't push themselves enough. Just do what the PT tells you to do and call it a day. Be patient and be even more patient the older you are because recovery takes more time with an older body. Keep a positive mental attitude and keep faith because one of the great things is that we CAN heal; physically, mentally and emotionally. I don't know how caught up you are in western medicine mentality but I'd suggest being open to other therapies too, like acupuncture, etc. Be careful with the pills I think the physical repercussions of pills negatively offset the painkilling attributes. Don't be closed minded. They say doctors make the worst patients so be careful you don't slip into that category (if you have a wife she can monitor this, plus women tend to have a higher pain threshold anyway). And lastly, I'm a big fan of visualization so visualize playing the guitar and what you want the injured hand/side to be doing. Keep sending that brain command into the recovering side. I think it works, injured or healthy. Once again, best of luck.

I'm hoping you have a full and speedy recovery.

When I was in a similar situation, I asked the Dr if I would be able to play the Violin afterwards and he said sure. I said, that's great I could never play it before. (ba dum pa)

I like that, man!!!

I'm gonna ask the doctor the same question tomorrow just before the anesthetic knocks me out...

All written above is in my plans. I have a physiotherapist friend-a skiled one. My woman have an acoupuncture specialist friend-a skilled one. I don't take pain killers - I dont like chemical threatement when it is not needed. And I take a lot of Arnica montana 9CH because I am a medical representative of Boiron-the largest world homeopathy drug ompany cool.gif

I smashed the end of my left ring finger in a window frame the other day. Painful but not really too damaging, I think, though I can already see that this is another spot that is going to hurt whenever the weather changes. So I have been mostly laying off guitar for a few days. Sometimes these things can have a silver lining. I am finally getting around to a closer listen to The Complete Clef / Verve Count Basie 50's Studio Recordings, a massive box set from Mosaic. Freddie Green, wow! Some amazing horn solos. Some so magnificent I am thinking of transcribing. Hip Shidt!
