Riffster
Social Distortion ~Where the hell was I?~ I had been looking for a band like this for a decade, I knew it had to exist and it was right under my nose. Yea, I know the songs on the radio over the years, the greatest hits if you will, good songs, could not make up a style for this band and for good reason they have gone from punk to rocakbilly to straight up rock and roll. I have seen their albums on the shelves for decades but never listened to a full album. "I Was Wrong" was playing heavily on the radio when I moved to Nashville the last days of 1996. Songs like Ball and Chain and the cover of Ring of Fire are pretty good, famous, but that gives not indications as to how good their albums are. Fast forward to 2012, a guy I meet tells me he used to drum in a band, I ask him what style? he says like Social Distortion and I get a vague idea based on the only songs I knew which are pretty diverse. Soooo...I find a 3-pack CD from their 90's albums for $8 at Best Buy on sale, can't go wrong. Holy cow!!! these records are great from beginning to end, I have since bought the two more recent albums and I am in love with this band. Their radio hits pale in comparison tgo the manyu jewels these albums contain. Have you ever had something like this happen to you?
moparguy
Joe Bonamassa! Where the hell has he been all this time? He has been around for a long time and I heard of him about 1 1/2 years ago when I saw the LIVE AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL performance on Palladia. That my friend was a HELL of a concert. Riffster
Ha, I heard Joe, like 6 years ago and I thought I was late to the party. I remember posting about him here in my first days of the forum and I heard crickets.

daveinspain
Hasn't happened to me in a long time but that's the reaction I had when I first heard Gentle Gaint... Couldn't get enough, every album I found was mind boggling. But that is ancient history now...

quapman
Apparently since joining this forum I have learned I have missed the boat on all kinds of bands/artists. One of the great things about this place is hearing stuff I don't know. But I have my old faithfuls and they keep me happy so I haven't searched out music for a couple decades. I'm ok with it. But I do enjoy seeing new stuff on hear. So ya,,, I have missed fleets of boats over the years.
Izzy
Apparently since joining this forum I have learned I have missed the boat on all kinds of bands/artists. One of the great things about this place is hearing stuff I don't know. Yeah, the thing is when you're a kid and you have no real life worries you can focus on hanging with friends and they say, "Yo check it! Heard the new Dr. Dre? Heard the new STP? You never heard of Rob Zombie?!" But you get old and Mtv stopped playing music ages ago and your friends are all talking about, "he's teething and the other day..." or about, "works sucks, my boss sucks." So you lose touch with art because real life gets in the way. All you have exposure to is what the media makes a big deal about, like a twerking miley, and you think, "music sucks now". I mean, where the fk was I when Porcupine Tree got out there? I miss the boat on loads of stuff, but I try to keep up by signing up with newsletters from certain record labels. Domino Records has my favorite band ever signed (The Kills) and then I looked at the record label site and found Anna Calvi. That's one method. Another is having threads on here from time to time on what new stuff you're listening to.
Rocky4
Mostly jam bands like moe and especially Umphrey's McGee. I do like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers old stuff and I wish I was aware of them before they became boring.
L5Larry
Have you ever "miss the boat" on a band or artist? With the members we have here on this forum, I think the question should be " Have you ever "miss the boat" AS a band or artist? YEP!
charlie brown
"Missed the boat"....yeah, big time! Been tryin' to get back on the boat, ever since... but, I think it left, already! Some of the time, I have NO IDEA who you all are talking about, band wise, these days. I'm reasonably open minded (I think) about new music, but, after all these years, I also know what I do, and don't like. So...??? The absolute best band, I ever played in, for overall musicianship, I (and, the bass player) left... voluntarily, after less than a year, due to to the other's having (increasingly) more serious drug problems. It's sad, too...because I think, without those problems, we could have, really DONE something, musically. CB
swampash
Powderfinger. A great rock band from Australia. Got into them in 2010, a year before they split after 20 years together. Still, they left a great back catalogue to enjoy and I still got to see them live. :)
pippy
I was over 20 years late in 'discovering' Aerosmith. I had heard of them but didn't care about knowing them until 'Get A Grip' came out in (hang on and I'll check) 1993... I still like three or four tracks on that one 20 years further on down the road... P.
badbluesplayer
I didn't listen to ANY contemporary music - period - from about 1980 to 95. So I didn't miss anything .

I missed out on the Beatles when they played in New York, I was too young to get out to the concert. But I did catch them on the tube. Oh well. LMAO, but yea you are right. I heard a guy say: you only listen to the radio and think new music sucks? well, you deserve it. Music is the soundtrack of your life, when we are young and are in discovery mode we are open and fascinated by new stuff and strongly associate the music with life experiences, some folks cannot let go of that and nostalgia kicks in. Then there is the sense of belonging, the herd mentality that we all can have, the sense of belonging where we do not pay attention to a band unless it gets big and we can relate to others. I just went to see Iron Maiden and the comradery was strong, some people look for that and do not feel the same in a club with a show with only 50 people in attendance. Then a funny thing happens when the same fans say "I would have loved to see Iron Maiden in the beginning playing clubs" funny because these same folks WOULD NOT have gone to such shows. Wow, nice post. I feel very attached to music of my teens because of nostalgia, and I also keep up with new songs on the radio because I can sing a little at work and people dance a bit or sing along and it feels good to be IN. You described my drive to listen very well. I do seek out new interesting quality sounds, though, partially to get away from the nostalgia without resorting to drivel. I want new memories and new grooves. New music by old bands still give me the feel of nostalgia. New GOOD music makes me feel young again.
Twang Gang
Frank Vignola and Tommy Emanuel are two jazz guitar players who I was surprised to find. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKpILqurFME Some incredible playing there. What struck me most was how at the beginning if I didn't see who it was I would have guessed that the lead Tommy was playing was Chet Atkins!! surfpup
for me my latest "find" from long ago is Rose Tattoo More folks should make this discovery! I mean, where the fk was I when Porcupine Tree got out there? I don't think you should beat yourself up too badly about that one. Great stuff but not too widely known I think - unless you read a lot of Prog rock press. I only encountered them recently myself - but very glad I did! BTW have you checked out any of Steven Wilson's solo stuff? A bit less "jammy" and maybe more "composed" than Porcupine Tree but still awesome.
