2004 Gibson Les Paul Standard

I was at my local guitar shop this afternoon and a guy walks in with a 59 Historic and a 04 Standard Les Paul. The guy did not like the neck on his Standard "too thin" 60's slime, and did not like the "59", fat 50's, neck too thick. He traded both guitars in for an even trade on a New 2012 "59" Historic and walked out of the store. After the trade was finished I grabed the 04 Standard and put it on layaway. I'm going to pick my, new to me, Les Paul tomorrow. While playing the guitar it was in perfect tune and the intonation was spot on right out of the case. The color is amber just what I was looking for. $1300 includeing taxes. Immediatly after the guy left the store my buddy who made the deal makes a phone call and the "59" was sold. Someone bought the Les Paul Historic over the phone with out seeing or playing the guitar. I played the "59" and it had a really fat neck just like from the 50's. The "59 also had what looked like a one pc back. Both guitars sounded great but that "59" was way out of my comfort range. The only problem I can see with my 04 Standard is that the guy pulled the cover off of the bridge pickup. The cover is in the case but I will leave it off because it looks cool. By the way both of the Les Pauls were bought new at my local guitar shop.

Sounds like you got yourself a really good deal.

I, too, am looking forward to the snaps!

It would be interesting to know in which year the '59 he traded was made.

I have a '93 R9 and the neck is certainly far more beefy than the newer versions. It's fatter than all the R8s I've played and I think the R8s are meant to be thicker than the R9s?

And I think I'm correct in saying all Historics have one-piece mahogany bodies.
