Thumbs Up

zigzag

Recommended Posts

I understand why the guys that run this forum got rid of plus and minus post rating signs, and I appreciate their thinking. But I miss being able to show someone that I like/agree with their post without having to make a post of my own. Wouldn't you gentlemen and ladies like to see something like a thumbs-up option for a good post, even with an indication of who gave it? A count of thumbs-up is not even necessary, who cares about that, really?

My understanding of the situation is that a (known) number of members were systematicaly abusing the minus button.

Perhaps withholding the right to use the buttons for certain members for a pre-determined period of time might be one option the Mods might consider?

Agreed.

I would even be ok with thumbs down. Have both available per comment.

They can still be unanimous.

Just don't make them count against your profile.

The whole scoring thing was ridiculous. Posters were more interested in being popular than

having actual opinions.

When they first got here (this time round) some complained, now some complain that the thumbs are gone. [flapper]

I was thinking about this issue as well, glad it was brought up.

Question: were we able to see who gave us the thumbs?

I sort of like knowing who agrees. It never seems redundant to see a quote with a +1 and I think you can get more specific about what precise aspect of a comment you are +1-ing.

The -1 were to me near useless because I'd sooner state why I disagree...unless someone is just being an a-hole and it is self-evident, which I don't recall that ever being the case.

I would think a simple "Like" button would do but with this requirement. The forum would list who "liked" the post right under the text of the post.

Something like this:

Notes Norton likes this post

That way the poster would know who appreciated his or her post.

I'm not fond of a minus post, I prefer to be positive.

If someone disagrees with the post, he or she should come out and say so, explain why, and if possible offer constructive suggestions.

bobf8332 partially disagrees with this post. Showing who agrees/likes is a really good idea, but *might* be a problem with really popular posts. The part I really disagree with is the Like/Agree only option. To me this smells of yet more social engineering by taking away the tools of honesty**. Having names listed should go a long way toward minimizing abuse.

** "Online behavior" vs "Face/Face behavior" is a related, but BIG subject. I believe it is the core problem with *anonymous* +/-, Like/Dislike, Agree/Disagree ornaments. The way it is now, effort AND identity are required to comment either way. Maybe this is the best approach.
