Reliability

I bought a Korg SV-1 two years ago and its now...defunct.

In searching for a replacement I was faced with a decition:

1. Buy the same model and make and get a 3 year warranty on it.

2. Buy a different make/model because clearly they have proved themselves unreliable.

The motherboard is out and I have not seen this issue on Korg forums, but I don't know...

would you trust the company that sold you a lemon with another of the same?

Perhaps it could be repaired at reasonable cost...

Korgs are widely used by pros

IMX Yamahas are pretty well bullet proof and Rolands are too

It is very annoying when PCB's fail

No simple answer in reality...one needs total confidence in one's tools...

For me it depends on how you liked it before it broke down. My old Casio is still working after almost 25 years. There are so many keyboards out there. They are basically computers today, which change every 3 months or so. Can't nail down which one will work better than another. Getting advice from a mom and pop store is your best bet.

I am very pleased with the four Korg digital recorders of mine. They were made between 2005 and 2010 and work flawlessly. I know of several musicians who use Korg keyboards since decades. Two years ago, the display of a late 1980s M1 failed to perform, and the spare part ordered from Korg came within less than 48 hours.

I'm not sure. I guess it would depend on how many of their products I have tried.

If it was my first go around with them I might not trust them.

I ended up buying a Yamaha clp-340 for my kids to learn on. Mostly because I kinda

trust Yamaha and have had success with them in the past.

The first Ford I ever bought was a major lemon. I shy'd away from them ever since.

On the other hand I had a bulletproof F150 I used for years without any trouble.

Korg has been around for ever. If you can't find any complaints online that match yours perhaps you

just got unlucky.

Tough call,,

I personally would look elsewhere.(if that were my first Korg)

Right or wrong, that's just me.

I think Rocketman makes a great point. How much did you like it before it broke?

This thing was NICE. I love the sound and the only item that comes close is an item twice as costly. The costly item (Nord Piano 2HP) is probably as good or better (judging from the Nord Stage I tried).

Fixing mine is not an option because I searched the interwebs and there is no motherboard for the Korg SV 1 being made/sold by Korg or being sold by anyone. I could buy the same keyboard and have spare parts or I could upgrade to something incredible...for lots of dough.

I know some keyboards are super-reliable. I see some old ones kicking and I think, "mine was only two, wtf?" Maybe I got unlucky, I'm not too bitter about it. It happens. I know better now.

Thanks for ya'll's input. See, this is why I love guitars...this wouldn't have happened with a guitar. Even if you gotta fix it you CAN fix it.

I'm not really a Keyboard guy but I had a Midi-step back in the 90's, had two sound modulus, one Yamaha and one Kurzweil. The Kurzweil sounded much better. The Yamaha was a lower priced unit but I've been around Yamaha gear quite a bit, they are built to last but fall short sonically IMHO. Thinking back, the Kurzweil wasn't a top of the line model ether but they don't sell to much on the lower end of the market and this unit was used when I got it while the Yamaha was new. Some times you get a bad apple, maybe that's what you got there's no telling really.

My only Korg is an R3, it's a nice little synth that almost gets analog.

I think Piano sounds are just dogma, the best are the ones you believe are best, so I understand if Korg makes the best piano sounds for you.

I have Roland Fantom xA and a Hammond XK-1. The Roland starts with some good piano sounds that I can fool with and make some great ones, to me. The Hammond has a couple piano sounds, not so much for me, but I bought that for the obvious reasons.

Nord is nice stuff, I like their sounds, but they are heavy on the Hammond stuff that I already have covered. Try some Yamaha, they have some really nice piano sounds, and some of the different workstations let you really mess with them.

Good luck, I hope you get it replaced. Keys are a whole nother animal, most guitar players don't quite unnerstand what it's like to love something that will be obsolete after lunch, because most of us are using guitars thought up 60 years ago or so.

So true about keys becoming obsolete and losing value, but honestly...there are some classics out there. The 303, 808, 909s by Roland just blow my mind when I think of how desired they are. Maybe analog is its own thing and digitals are all doomed to be trashed after ten years *sigh

Its nice to see another key player on here. I know I could have posted in a gear or piano forum but mostly I wanted to know in general with ANY electronic, be it a TV or a computer, weather people let the one time let down kill their faith in a product.

A big deal to me is costumer service. I may stick with a company that has overpriced items, one which has sold me one or two lemons if they have good CS. That there is golden to me.

I spoke with a Korg rep and she hooked me up with a guy who can sell me a board for my girl and I'm SO relieved. Korg responded promptly and helped me find a solution. Noted as a costumer.

Glad you will get over your trouble soon. It is notable for me as well since it confirms the reports I got up to now about the Korg service. Thanks for keeping us informed, Izzy. [thumbup]
