Guitar Madness and the Case for a New Case

Here's some foolishness for you.

My recent Gibson L-0 purchase came with this smelly old case with broken wings and latch - it made it here in it somehow:

$(KGrHqRHJFMFG)U+fh!WBRuz)CDkug~~60_57.JPG

It is too big and ugly and broken and the guitar sounds too good to stay in THAT!

So even after buying a number of L Gibsons, including a Blues King with the infamous gig bag, we still don't seemed to have learned anything - like make sure the guitar comes with a GREAT case, you nit!

So I also know that getting a Gibson L-00 case in this neck of the woods is fairly unlikely, but I rang all the known haunts with no luck.

And I also have read where some people on the Gibson forums have had some luck getting an L-00 case, but I didn't see any. I contacted Elderly's by email and explained the situation - I actually may need TWO cases for Gibson L-0 shape. My contact there, Patrick Z, actually put a Blues King they had for sale in a new case he had looked up for me, to check the fit - PERFECT!

So I went to order the case to find it was going to cost the same as a guitar in a case to get here by Fedex - $US250 just to send the case!

No good!

Plan B began hatching.....................

After buying a couple of LG guitars in their old cardboard cases, I had bought two very different cases to put them in - my LG-0 is in a Martin 000 case and my LG1 is in a classical guitar case. I thought I would go to the shop where I got the classical case, take my LG1 again and get another case the same. Then the L-0 would go in the Martin 000 case.................

So, a bit of case shuffling to check the theory works - a bit of hard, hot work - drag the 3 cases out, take out the guitars, lean them in a safe spot, put A in to C, C into B, B in to nothing....... Success!

Off to the shop with LG1 in case, so to speak...... found a classical guitar size case, tried the LG1 in it, bought it, came home, shuffled them all around again.

DONE!

And I also bought a five guitar rack which I had to put together and it didn't have any instructions.............

I have no idea how Tom and Red and the guys with guitars everywhere go about all this, but......

You are right, GL - the guitar case looks ok in the seller's photo above.

But it is a old Martin dread case and very big, 2 latches are kaput and the hinges on the back are missing, turning it into a giant mouse trap. And it smells....

Off to the rubbish. A handy recycler will find it.

I like to have both newer and orginal cases around. While old guitars look so good sitting in an original Geib or Lifton case there is no way to get around the fact that the newer cases offer a whole lot better protection.

But I do know exactly what you are saying about your L-00 and that thermoplastic thingy. When I got my 1930s Oscar Schmidt-made jumbo it came in one of those newer generic plastic cases. Man, the guitar just did not look right sitting in it. After looking around for a bit, I finally scored a 1960s Martin OM case.

My usual MO on cases is to stake out the small music stores. They have been known to get some el cheapo guitars in on trade that are accompanied by a very nice case which they are very willing to let go separately.

I hate to say it but the other place to look is eBay. A few months back I put in an offer of $90 on a 1950s black Lifton case which was in about as nice a condition as I have seen. I got it. It did take me about three weeks to get the musty smell out of it but my old Epiphone is now happily nestled in it.

My D-35 owns such a coffin. I had it out the other day for a performance at a private party, but brought it in another case :

The beautiful emerald interiored case, which belongs to the HD-28V.

I never particularly liked the grayish Ovation-like late70's-80's thing and apparently ain't hip enough to declare it 'meta'. . .

My L-0 is liking it's new home in the TKL Martin 000 case like these:

I too like the emerald green - it goes well with brown guitars......................

And ZW - I got the classical case at a fairly local Mom & Pop.

If you're handy enough -

I wanted a case for my first guitar my Mom bought me.

Most I looked at were too big, even the TKL case I have for my LG1 that fit's it nice.

A couple weeks ago I bought a LP Gator case on sale from MF for $79.

Pulled off the lining in the body area.

Traced the guitar, cut the styrofoam completely through (it had a wedge shape).

Bought a piece of 1/2" styrofoam from hobby shop and glued in a new bottom.

Bought a piece of fun fur and glued it in and wound up with a perfect fit.

Martin triple-oh twelve fret case? That's a new one. Does a blues king sit in there snug but not too tight? Some classical cases are too tight. Depth fit?

Martin has these 'vintage series' cases with maroon velvet interior that I love.

The TKL Martin 000 case is a touch loose, Jerry, but I really like them ( I have 2). They are nice and light and simple - some other case I have are way too heavy and others have rotten mouse trap latches.

My 37 L-0 came with the original skinny leather strap which has been tied on the neck since 1937, so instead of putting a slice of padding in the case, I just unravel the strap into the gaps.... The strap is by coincidence, adjusted perfectly for me to play ala Gary Davis - sitting or standing! So it is staying.

Back to the TKL case - they are fairly common, so the best thing would be to lug the Blues King down to a music shop and give it a try - the classical cases are ok, but you need to check the depth, so again, you have to take the guitar with you.

They all possibly vary more that Gibsons!

EDIT: Warning Jerry - I probably have the 000 - 14 fret TKL cases and put the wrong link to the 12 fret case....

Eldely Insturments is selling this guitar case that is made for the small body Gibson. There is also a cheaper 3 ply version of this for $80.00.

Helpful reply to people living closer to Elderly's, thanks Bryn!

But it would cost me $US250 to get it sent here to me by Fedex - the same as a guitar!.

After making many measurements, and after much research. I took my Taylor GC6 from its case, and I put my "The Loar" LO-16 in the Taylor case. It fit perfectly. My Loar is suppose to be the same specs/size as a Gibson L-00. The "Loar" L0-16 I just picked up yesterday for a beater guitar, and now I'm looking for a real Gibson L-00 guitar. The Keb Mo is out of my price comfort range so I'm looking for a Blues King. Gibson should make more small bodied guitars they play and sound great. I have not tried it yet but the L-00 Gibson is the size of a 000/0M Martin. So I would look for a TKL 000 size case. Also look for a SKB Small body guitar case made for an Martin OM/000 or a Taylor X12/GC. I would go with a TKL or a Gurdian wooden case.

I'm learning a lot on this thread. I never knew how great the small bodied Gibsons sounded until a couple days ago. I've always been a Drednought/Jumbo guy. Now I'm hooked on Gibson Small Bodies. They sound great and fit just right when playing. What do you guys think of the L-00 Pro?
