Lespaulist
Hi Everyone, I am looking for some opinions on this one. What do you think of the top of the guitar below? It's LP Standard Premium Plus... I am on the fence about the top. It is supposed to be AAA top.
Eracer_Team
I see some tight flame in there.. what happens if you look at a angle to the guitar? although a litte too much grain on the top half of the body for me. can you post a side view of the guitar? rct
AAA means whatever anyone wants it to. It's a nice looking Les Paul to me, but because of that top they prolly want too much for it. rct
BigKahune
. That's a beautiful top. Gibson's AAA grade for flamed maple (aka 'Premium Plus' top) is usually nicely figured with a few run outs, but mostly the figuring goes to the edges. It is not unusual to be able to see the grain through the figuring. The top in in the pic looks to me like a Gibson AAA. Check this thread where I posted some pics of different grades - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/105631-figured-tops/page__view__findpost__p__1428341 The amount of figuring in the top is sometimes a crap shoot. First, there can be a lot of variance in each grade - A, AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAAA. Second, if Gibson doesn't specify the grade and just uses the term "figured", there can be a much wider variance in the figuring between guitar tops. Because of the variance in the grade, if you order a figured top sight unseen, you could end up with a top you're not satisfied with, so it's best to buy in person; but retailers that provide good pictures of the guitars they sell works. . lovethosegibsons
That is a killer top. Even more so with the grain showing..
nick_s
Flame AND grain, that's one mighty fine top. Question is, does it play and sound well?
Bender 4 Life
i'd trade my wife for that guitar !! and I LOVE Mrs.B.........
pippy
It's LP Standard Premium Plus... It is supposed to be AAA top. If Gibson says it's a 'Les Paul Standard Premium Plus' then it is, by definition, a AAA top. Read rct's post (#5). Whilst I personally love figure and grain in a top I actually don't like the flow of the grain on that example. I don't like the way it all deflects towards the butt-end strap-pin. But nick_s is right when he suggests the important things are how it plays and sounds. All JMHO, of course. P.

badbluesplayer
Me personally, I don't like the grain so much. It's too prominent for my taste. But I'm not a grain lover. Just personal taste.
Lespaulist
Thanks for all the replies. I like the bottom flame but I'm not sure if I like how everything matches up on the top half. It's new, old stock and what I think is a great price. So I am considering purchasing it. I do need to play it still.
Lespaulist
So I wound up purchasing it... It was a good price, plays nice but could use a little setup. I'll take some more pictures and post them.
cjsinla
It looks good to me, good price too. It must be AAA because mine is supposed to AA and yours is much more striking looking.
