Strap Challenge Solved

5 guitars, 2 with strap buttons, 3 without. This past weekend experienced getting knocked around in first position by the leather laces I use to tie the strap to the headstock. Thought there must be a way... This past June at the Gibson Homecoming the Gibson brass handed out keychains - I removed the key ring, and did this with the leather clasp. Works ok. For the most part keeps the laces out of the way, especially when thumbing the "F". This is on the J-200 that I don't feel comfortable in modifying in any way. Is this the way to do it? Hate to be an idiot, but I'm new to using straps - took me the better part of 3 months to get the lengths dialed in for ideal playing.

I had one of these somewhere. I think it was on the D-28 I recently sold. I think my mind would snap if I put a Martin headstock strap thing on my Gibson J-200. No telling what kind of physiological baggage that might leave on the guitar. Maybe I could grind off the CFM moniker.

I have those on my Martins.

I found some no names for my Gibsons.

Good catch there. I guess it is a bit gauche using Martin accessories on a Gibson. After I landed a bunch of fabulous Martin owners club straps at around 15 bucks apiece I became somewhat inured to it! But the basic idea of a leather loop with a button really works well, although the positioning of most guitars is even better if you have a button installed at the base of the neck.

These don't look as traditional as the leather things but I had one that went with a guitar I sold . works the very best.

( I've often wondered why you couldnt get those little leather things in anything other than martin branding)

Solving.........

The strap is a Sully. I have two of his creations, made from old reconditioned harness and rein leather he tracks down and works. Very rich, vintage leather which makes for a very supple, already broken-in strap. The headstock loop is just one of the Martin things turned so the name is on the back of the headstock when attached.

Sully Straps

Excellent work.

The headstock wrap doesn't stay on the guitar.......it's buttoned on the end of the strap. Never had an issue with finish reaction to the leather contact.

Okay - my personal experience with long time contant is limited, but someone told me the patterns of small blisters on the back of my 1968 SJ came from strap contact while lying in the case. The exact material of course is unknown.

I had a bunch of those but the nice strap my wife got for me is too thick to fit on the button. Sold them all.

See ! Not everything about the '60's was wonderful :)

That is the reason I had the good sense to be born in the 70's. ;)

Probably a vinyl strap. Vinyl eats nitro: http://www.frets.com...inyl/vinyl.html

You're probably right - mine's a little smaller, but yes - good information.
