rdclmn7
I wonder if there are plans to reintroduce bindings on Studios, to this day I consider it a mistake to have removed them.
FennRx
probably not. the point of the studio was to make a standard with fewer cosmetic touches. the binding is actually a rather expensive and labor intensive feature. So while it certainly looks nice, I doubt it will be coming back.
Eracer_Team
I've seen pictures of some of the members here on the forum that have scrapped away at the nitro and paint down to the bare maple cap and re-nitro'd it to look like 'natural' binding. Guest Farnsbarns
Did the basic LP studio ever have binding?
capmaster
Did the basic LP studio ever have binding? Can't remember to ever have seen one. There were translucent finishes making the maple top obvious I think, but not a real binding I believe.
rct
Early ones had binding on the neck and dots, they are quite pretty to look at. There's one not far from here, it was on consignment for around a grand, 83? 84? Something like that. If I didn't have a great les paul I woulda thought about buying that one. rct

Those were the Studio Standard and the Studio Custom models. They came out, as you say, in '83, a year after the Studio itself came out. They were meant to be a half-way-house between the Studio and the fancier versions but, being neither 'flesh, fowl nor good red herring' were not popular and only lasted for a coupe of years. There are a few forumites with them and they are, indeed, pretty things. P.

pippy
Do they have nibs at the fret wire ends? Hi Cap. Yes, they do. Here's a link to one of the old threads which has posts showing both a Studio Custom (#12) and a Studio Standard (#14); http://forum.gibson....es-paul-member/ Apart from the dot inlays they were pretty much identical to their 'big brothers'. The Studio Custom had multi-ply binding but only on the front. The back was un-bound. P.
capmaster
Thank you very much, P. Sorry for my negligence. I simply wasn't deep enough into the linked topic and didn't remember the pic of the Studio Custom you posted in #12 before I was seeing it again now. After having looked to the ebay link in #19, I was stunned about the price the related Studio Standard finally sold for. This is pretty the same as charged for a brand-new Standard 2013 - incredible! Thanks again, capmaster
pippy
If anyone was negligent then it was me! I was relying on memory earlier on and got the dates wrong. Reading through the old thread I see the Studio Custom lasted from '84-'85 (not '83-'84 as I didn't quite 'remember') and the Studio Standard carried on until '87! P.
