Corey
A chance to trade my J100 for A Taylor 410 through a Craigslist ad. I have not had the J100 but for a week but it really is a good guitar. I also have not had a chance to play the Taylor yet but I did go to the local music store and play a new one. Wasn't real impressed with it but it was brand new and had not had a chance to open up. Has anyone owned a 410 and what are your opinions about that guitar?
duluthdan
Why is the J-100 already on your short list? I am not a Taylor guy, don't know that i've ever played a 410, but I don't think I've ever even considered moving out a good guitar after such a short time. Just curious. Corey
That is a good question. I really like the guitar and it's my third Gibson. I got it last week at such a great price that I thought a Taylor 410 might be trading up, I guess.
frenchie1281734003
Which variation of the J-100 do you have Corey? Steve.
frenchie1281734003
I see it`s from 87, so it`s Nashville made, probably with small belly up bridge and finished in black. is that the one? Steve.
Versatile
Interesting conundrum... It will be a personal risk...age and condition will play a big part The J100 is toted as a 'no frills' J200...alledgedly similar woods etc at a much lower price... The Taylor has different woods, so would need sitting with before deciding if suitable Both excellent guitars I like Taylors a lot...friends and aquaintances play them...they sound bright and well defined...perhaps the edge for fingerstyle... Corey
Yes, it is the black Nashville edition. I was ready to trade yesterday but took it out of its case again and played it. Even for the less desirable 1980s Nashville , the sound has really opened up and is incredible even with my playing so that's why I am in this conundrum now. MissouriPicker
The Taylor 410 is a pretty decent instrument. Whither or not swapping guitars is wise is kind of a toss up. Depends on the condition of each I guess. I don't know if it's "trading-up." Taylors are great guitars for Taylor people. I find them sounding too brittle and bright, but that's just my view. Other people like the way they are voiced. I won't say "never again," but it'svery doubtful. For me, I need to feel that a guitar is an extension of who I am.... At the same time, I'm not big on black guitars, no matter what the brand is. They're too glossy for me. It worked with Cash, but haven't for me.......If you're not crazy about either guitar, it might be best to wait until you find something you really want instead of taking chances. I wouldn't swap guitars just to be swapping guitars. Either way, I hope you end-up with the guitar you need.
Markini
Well I am a Gibson guy, but do own Martins and Taylors. I find that the Taylors a 310 and the mini really record outstandingly for instrumental parts. I use the Gibbys for vocals picking and strumming. If you are into some acoustic lead playing IMO the Taylors do a better job than my birds. But the Taylors come no where close to the sweetness of the birds honey sound. 2003 HB STD 2010 HB TV 2010 HB PRO 2007 Gibson (Garrison)

6stringTom
Of course, it's a very personal decision, but questions worth considering: 1. Why are you considering trading a guitar you just bought? Are you disappointed in it? Did you buy the wrong guitar for you? If yes, can you just return it? 2. Why is the seller interested in the trade? Why is he looking to get rid of the Taylor? You seem to like the Gibson, and don't seem to know a lot about the Taylor. The motivation on both sides of the trade strike me as unclear, and that is a formula for possible later regrets. I hope you end up happy, whatever you decide to do. Let us know the outcome.
