djroge1 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Basically it's another day off of work. If I remember, it began as the day when the church boxes were open and the money handed out to help the poor. At one time in churches in England would have boxes for one to place their money/offering. Some of the bigger churches had multiple labeled boxes - to designate your giving. Also, since the wealthy folks had servants who prepared meals and served it on Christmas day, they obviously had to work on Christmas, but in place they would get the next day off of work - on boxing day. For those who live in a country that celebrates boxing day please correct me if I'm mistaken. I only lived in England for 1 1/2 years and that was about 10 years ago. For us Americans, we put things that we didn't like or don't fit back in boxes and return them on this day. Ha ha

jefleppard Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 i believe it began as occasion to rid one's home of all thing old by boxing them up and putting them out to the roadside where salvation army carts/carriages would pick them up. the used goods would be distributed to the poor. here's more... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day
