beekun Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Hello all. New member here looking for some advice. I have a 1961 SG (S#30800) with a bad pickup. Shorted out. I want to know what would be be the best replacement that would: 1. Be like the original 2. Maintain value. It's a standard SG with black plastic covers on the PUs. Nice guitar in excellent condition other than the PU. I bought it from the original owner in 1970 for 60 bucks. Mates up nicely with my 61 J45. Thanks in advance for any help.
ibis Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I'd seriously consider having the original repaired (rewound if necessary) by someone sympathetic to vintage instruments and their value. In the UK I'd suggest Tim at Bareknuckle. Perhaps WB Pickups is a good choice Stateside? I'm sure others here can help you pin down the right guy.
hellion102792 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Black plastic covers? It's not a P-90, is it? I've never seen a humbucker with a black plastic cover.
Guitar slinger Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Black plastic covers? It's not a P-90' date=' is it? I've never seen a humbucker with a black plastic cover.[/quote'] Well, there are those active pickups...
beekun Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 Black plastic cover about 1.25" x 3.00" with screws to adjust sensitivity. I googled P90 and it looks like a p90 soap bar. I have all the pieces. Is it possible to get it rewound? I have a feeling the ax might be collectible due to low serial number. I am a bit naive in that regard because i bought both to play and the SG and the 45 have seen a lot of action over the 38 years I've owned them. Played a lot of slide on the SG (something of a religion here in Allman country).

Played a lot of slide on the SG (something of a religion here in Allman country). The P-90's coming out now are more or less the same as the old ones. You could either buy a new one, or search eBay for a vintage one. Or, there are probably luthiers in your area who could rewind it or refer you to someone who can. And I think your axe is definitely a collectible due to the age, man. 1961 was the first year for SG's! Now post PICTURES =P~
Guitar slinger Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I would call Jason Lollar for 4 reasons: 1 He is THE man when it comes to pickups. The best, in my opinion. 2 He IS acnowledged for making the best P-90s ever - so that's not just my opinion. 3 He seems to be a nice guy and you can call him directly. 4 He could dig the job =)
SGJ Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 1. I really want to see pics of this guitar 2. I really want this guitar
Guitar slinger Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 By the way, I'm talking about contacting Mr Lollar to REWIND the pickups. Sorry, I'm a vintage geek.
lous1952 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Contact either Jason Lollar or Lindy Fralin. It might be repairable without a rewind, you never know. Do not put a replacement pickup in- even a rewound original is better than a replacement.
beekun Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 I'll post some pictures tomorrow. It's good looking if I do say so myself. BTW - I lost the whammy bar somewhere along the line so if anyone is aware of a place to get a replacement please fill me in. It's not a Bigsby - just the standard Gibson cheapo version from the era.
Dynadude Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 A rewind should be cheaper than buying new.
