Limited Edition models - how many get made?

Hi All

Been trying to figure out just what "limited edition" means in case I come to sell one such recently acquired Epi in the future...

I've searched "how many [insert guitar model] were made?" etc but got no info of any value.

So does Ltd Ed mean "non-standard production model that we will only continue making if demand exists" or is it "we intend on making a limited number of these regardless of demand"?

I'm guessing the former. Does anyone with some familiarity with this know for sure?

Is there anyway to find out how limited a limited run is if the latter is true?

Thanks for your help..

JC

In most cases they make a limited number regardless of demand. Sometimes the number is disclosed, sometimes it's not.

There might be several reasons for doing limited runs, and many of them we will never know I think. It may depend on deals they got when buying timbers or dyes, and so they decide to make guitars with special tops or finishes. Some of these are limited to only a few items and make it never to the manufacturer's website, although they have an official product number and the specifications are available through the Customer Service.

Those guitars are hard to locate sometimes. I accidentally own two of such a kind each. Accidentally indeed means exactly what it's saying since I found them brand-new at authorized dealers simply by accident.

Epiphone have two 'Non Standard' runs

1. Limited Edition

This means that the model is produced for a specific time and production numbers are not available. How many they produce could be dictated by dealer/distributor demand, perceived demand, management whim, availability of material/components.

2. Limited Run

These guitars have a specific numeric run of 100, 1000, 10,000 or whatever

Limited editions are generally standard guitars with a non standard finish whereas Limited Run guitars are generally recreations of specific historical models (such as the limited number Casinos)

Generally Limited Editions aren't worth a premium over normal models (unless they are rare or sought after - doesn't happen very often) whereas Limited Runs can command a significant premium as they usually are built to a much higher standard.

I guess i should have also said I was specifically interested in how many of the new Genesis Deluxe Pros were being made...

The chances of you finding out are significantly close to zero I'm afraid.

Ah ha.. what about the order of magnitude of the production run at least?

I got the impression by the keenness of this particular retailer to unload them at such a low price that these things may not be moving in which case I was guessing the production run could be over soon... would that leave them in the 1000s...?

Surely not the 100s... as many as the 10,000s or 100,000s?

Curious more than anything.. would never expect this thing to appreciate because of the ltd ed label but I do know there's a bit of a cult following of the genesis...

This subject kinda begs the broader question, just how many of each model are being made every year?
