Do the preamp tubes (V1 & V2) in a BC30 have to be the same?

Recommended Posts

Could I use, for example, a 12AT7 in V1 and a 12AX7 in V2 or vice versa or do they both have to be the same spec?

No idea as to how it would sound just curious as to if you can do it.

They don't need to be the same. Part of the fun of tube rolling is trying different combinations. Even the same type of tube, but a different manufacturer can change things. Be aware that the V! slot will, in most cases, have the biggest impact. Best place for the best tube. What type of amp, I'm not familiar with a BC30? In a Fender the 12AT7 goes really well in the V1 position. Other circuits, not so much.
