ronnie Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Hi All, Just bought me a Faded SG and I wanted to get it sprayed with lacquer to give it additional protection in addtion to adding New Buckers AY Signature and Burstbucker (this is incidental) I wanted to ask anyone whether they can offer some advice on spraying the guitar? Cheers Ronnie
Riffster Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I don't have step by step advice but I do recommend: Do good prep work on the guitar. Use nitrocellulose lacquer. Many thin spray layers are better than one or two thick layers. Lacquer takes a while to fully cure, be ready to wait a month before you use the guitar.
GuitarJunkie Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Gibson used little to no pore filler on the faded SGs. As StiffHand said, good prep work is a must. Otherwise the lacquer will just seep into the wood and you'll be applying coat after coat after coat.
lpdeluxe Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I have a Faded SG and it appears that the back of the neck was filled, but not anywhere else. Filling the grain pores would be the first step, then a sealer, before you start spraying a clear coat.
AS90 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 As above, you need to fill the grain or it will look shite. So you will need to sand it (not too much), grain fill it, sand it again, seal it with rustins, sand it again, shoot it with nitro (this is the only place to get it over here - http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/ ). You need a warm room to shoot the nitro so if you are planning on using a garage or the garden you will have to wait till summer. Be prepared to wait at least a month for it to cure before final sanding and finishing. More info here... http://www.reranch.com/reranch/
lpdeluxe Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I have to add, I really like the appearance of the Faded I have. No lacquer in its future....
