Locking Tuners

I recently bought a new 2008 les paul standard. I am not used to using the locking tuners. Anyone out there have them and can give me tips on them?

Our rhythm guitarist fitted some to his studio. They're really quick for string changes.

You turn the post until it clicks then you turn the knob so that the hole is facing away from the knob. Thread the string through the bottom. Pull it firmly. Finally you turn the tuning peg. Once the string is locked in to place you can keep turning and bring the guitar to pitch.

I guess I will have to mess with it the next time I string it. For some reason it doens't seem to work like that. I wonder if we are talking about the same tuners or I am just totally confused.

I'd be interested in knowing how it was working for you?

You never know, there might be a different way of doing it on certain models, it would be interesting to find out.

jrad100, I have a Tele with locking tuners as well. On the "F" website they tell you that you should tune from the sharp side and not from the flat like most other tuners. In other words, tune the string until it is a little sharp. Then loosten it until it is in perfect tune. Now, go to the next string. I'm not sure if the new LP standards tune that way or not.

Also, if you are having trouble stringing the tuner, are you loosening a knob on the back of the headstock for each tuner in turn to remove the string? Then, are you inserting the new string and retightening the knob? All this before tuning the string? Good luck.

I think the locking grovers are different now. on the bottom or back of neck side there is a screw that you turn and tighten to clamp the string down. I guess you thread the string, then tighten the screw on the bottom. then you tune the guitar.

I have locking tuners on my ROBOTs which have a screw on top and after market planet waves auto trim on my washburn that have a knob on the back/bottom. I really like them, make change strings a snap esp the auto trims.

After I take a string off I turn the peg until the string hole is lined up with where the string will be com'n off the nut.

Pull the string thru the hole and pull so it's snug, while holding it snug turn the knob and lock it down.

Now tune it up to pitch, while tuning it up I also keep turning the locking knob to make sure it's locked and when the extra length of string is in the best location I cut it off as close as poosible. The auto trim ones do it for ya, nice and clean.

If you want that nice clean cut on none auto trim ones you'll have pre cut them, I run them thru, lock'm down and then release them pull them out and cut above the lock mark. Don't pull the strings really tight as you lock'm the first time or you may have trouble getting them back in.

I've tried leaving about an inch of loose string before locking and having a few raps around the posts like a normal tuner and didn't like it.

I fine that my guitars with the locking tunes seem to make the string stiffer when bending, sort of like 009 feeling like 010. I think it because there is less string to give.

The also seem to break in quicker.
