spotrod Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Have any of you folks had a problem with the low E string (or any other string) tuning properly? After applying the reset procedure, I am still having the same problem with the low E string. It will try to tune, but quickly "gives up" and then it will de-tune all the way down as if it is stringing down. Then it just seems confused. If I manually get the low E string close (+/- a few cents)it will tune just fine. But, if I choose any other tuning, the low E string will again lose it's mind. All of the other 5 strings tune perfectly. I really do not want to send it back to Gibson as I had previously sent back a Robot to them four times just to correct a MCK knob problem (the clear button on the knob was not clicking, or providing that tactile response when it was de-pressed). They could not ever correct the problem, so I gave up. There was also some other damage done to my guitar after four visits to Gibson (toggle switch broken/scratches on back surface), so I am hoping (praying)that I do not have to send the DF back to them. Any thoughts???
Alouf Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I do not have a DF, but I have a "flaky" G string on my GOR that will tune after 8-10 plucks only...and even when it does tune, my Peterson stroboscope is telling me it is not perfectly tuned. I would hate to ship mine and to imagine it being mistreated by the courier, so I understand you there.
GuitarKen Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 From various documents i have seen, it looks like each string is its own conductor for the digital signal that it tunes with. Somehow the connection for that string is possibly not being made correctly. I would try taking the string off and looking around closely, and replacing. This is easier and cheaper than sending the guitar back My little brother got one that had a similar problem with the D string, but sent it in before he tried this. When you change strings be sure you cut the ends off as the end toucihng can cause tuning problems. Maybe Gibson support can post additional info or corrections to this if I am incorrect. If you do get this fixed lease post here in case others develop this problem.
spotrod Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 Thanks. I'll give that a try and post the results.
Dramey Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Anyone tried coated strings (Elixirs etc) with the Darkfire/Robot? I'm just wondering if the coating might impede the signal. Yeah I know, but I don't like really bright strings and don't tend to change them until they break so the Elixers are great for me. Granted auto stringing might get me to change them out more often.
spotrod Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 This may be the fix. I tried it and it seemed to work. Your problem is caused most likely by a non sufficient contact of the Powerhead. Try the following: Tighten the hex nut of the Powerhead of the low E-string 1/8 turn. If it doesn't help, turn it 1/8 turn again. If it still doesn't work, unscrew the Powerhead by loosening the hex nut. Make sure that the contacts are clean. Is there a brass sleeve inserted in the hole of the headstock? If so, remove it. Screw the Powerhead in again.
captainrico Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Maybe this is why there is an Allen key included in the box?
icing777 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Mine did come with the allen, but where exactly is it intended to go on the powehead? I do not see the place for it...
elantric Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Perhaps the supplied Allen Wrench is for raising/ lowering the stop Tailpiece?
spotrod Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 The hex nut being referred to is the "thin" hex nut that secures the powerhead to the headstock. After removing the string, remove the hex nut and washer. The powerhead can then be removed. There is a brass sleeve in the hole where the powerhead goes through the headstock. This can be removed by gently tapping it from the bottom.
wardmk1976 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 My guitar had the same issue. the remedy dint fix mine. I got a RMA now my guitar is on a FED EX truck back to Nashville fore repairs. They are going to address the MCK issue that everyone is seeming to have and the P90 that has the 60 cycle hum. I suggest anyone that is having issues you should get a RMA, and take use of the warranty they'll fix it and address all of your options.
