Atten: Tronical-MIDI with DF

I have read through the manual and I'm not finding any real answers about using DF with VI's. Is this possible with out having to use the hex out?

For example:

I want to just use the DF as a MIDI controller into Pro Tools and use VI's, such as a pad sound. Do need to get the roland or axom piece to accomplish this?

Will the RIP work as a standard MIDI interface so that Pro Tools can receive the information so I record MIDI parts with my guitar?

I'm kind of left in the Dark here. :-$ If you could shed some light on this topic it would awesome. Thanks very much for your time!

If i need any additional pieces of gear to make this happen please let me know what I would need, and how to configure it.

Best!

You need the RIP for MIDI control functionality.

The steps are:

* Buy Dark Fire - fill out the warranty and Gibson sends you the RIP box ( eta is mid January 2009)

* You contact Gibson for the optional Dark Fire RIP "Hex Out to Roland 13 Pin" adapter cable.

This 13 pin cable then feeds a Guitar to MIDI conversion unit.

These are popular models for Real Time {lowest latency} Guitar to MIDI Conversion:

Axon

Roland

G!-20

http://www.roland.com/products/en/GI-20/index.html

VG-99

http://www.roland.com/products/en/VG-99/index.html

For "non real time" {Highest latency} MIDI conversion - there are many software options. No cables needed other than the stock RIP box and a PC/Mac.

Cakewalk Sonar has a "wave to MIDI " function built in.

Here's a typical "VST Plugin" which could be run within Ableton and perform the Wav to MIDI conversion for each recorded String track from the RIP box.

I already redeemed my RIP from Gibson. Hopefully that hex cable will come in the box with all the other software and the hardware. If i have to buy an extra piece of gear then I will, the MIDI guitar function is far to cool to pass up. THanks for everyones feedback.

I understand this Rip Box "Hex to Roland 13 pin" adapter cable is optional, and must be purchased separately

That is what is stated in the RIP Owners Manual ( page 19)

Hex Output

The Hex output provides outputs from each string and is compatible with guitar-to-MIDI

converters made by Axon, Roland, and others. To patch RIP to the guitar-to-MIDI

converter, you’ll need a custom cable from Gibson; for additional information, go to the

Gibson web site at www.gibson.com.

So this is an optional adapter cable which will be announced shortly.
