Fullmental Alpinist
Now this is funny. Makes me want to give up writing country songs. Wait, I did that in 2012. Nice post, jannusguy2. FMA

j45nick
Now THAT was funny. It's one reason I can't listen to modern country music (or most other types of modern music as well). It's hard to be a singer/songwriter if your thematic range is limited to pickup trucks, booze, and girls in tight jeans, Not that there's anything wrong with girls in tight jeans, mind you. Or pickup trucks. Or booze.
hovishead
When someone says they hate country music I know the music above is what they are referring too. It's just boyband pop with twangy guitars however. Pretty funny though. Plenty of great country music being written today, just not that commercialized trash. MissouriPicker
Funny and true. If it wasn't for some scantily-clad women and a few Gibsons, I would have just wasted 3 minutes and 29 seconds of my life...........Sadly, the theme of this video is very typical of current day country music. And to me, all these guys sound the same.

jannusguy2
I don't know if they'd be considered bona fide country or not but two of my new favorite artists this year definitely employ some country overtones. Jason Isbell's LP Southeastern is a great record. Very fond of Joshua James as well. zombywoof
Todays country music is pretty much bad 1970s Southern Rock. You know you are in trouble when the finest performance you saw all year was the Darling family on the Andy Griffith show.
Calmwater
Jannusguy2, my wife and I already loved Jason Isbell, but you just introduced us to Joshua James...Wow great stuff.... If you haven't listened to them you might like Drive By Truckers...... Here's Isbell doing a song from when he was with the band.
GuitarLight
It's a shame. Because the guitars are so nice! You've got to pity the poor guitars. Oh what they must go through!

I saw the DBT when they opened for Tom Petty. Thought they were great - kinda a mixture of Muscle Shoals and country. I love guys though like Dave Alvin, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Tom Russel and, of course, Robert Earl Keen -

modoc_333
Unfortunately, this has been the formula in Nashville for at least 20 years..... if they have one hit, then they scramble to write songs of almost identical subject matter with the same catch phrases. Once they wear that out, they latch onto the next surprise hit and the cycle starts over. Here is an interesting story: a couple of years ago I was talking to a guy that is a pretty successful Nashville writer and player. (no i won't say who). He loves his job, and is happy to have it. But even he was frustrated with the state of things. He told one story that he really hated. He said when the songwriting teams write songs, they rate them from 1 to 5. 1 being horrible and 5 being the greatest hit you've ever heard. After rating, they throw out all of the 1s because they are garbage and won't sell. then they throw out the 5s! Why? because if they release something too good then they are afraid they won't be able to follow it and sell more crap. so the 2s go to the lower tier artists or as album filler. the 4s go to the big stars for use as singles, and everyone else gets the 3s. That's pretty sad. It really makes me want to hear those 5s that got tossed. Imagine what we are missing! also, imagine how bad it would be if you were one of those songwriters who wrote a 5 (maybe your first or only really great song) and you see it get tossed. that's tough and in the end we all lose.... and get left with the crap in the video at the top of this thread.
