harmonicchaos Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I WAAAAAANT you I know, I know, I decided that the twin was too loud but look at that price! You can't get cheaper than that. What do you guys think? btw i know someone who used to fix amplifiers so if there are issues i can probably get them solved for free.
KSG_Standard Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 It's loud!!!! You can't get the sweet overdriven tube sound with this amp unless you crank it up. It could be a good deal though, you could use it with an overdrive pedal at lower volumes and get a decent sound and you would have an amp that you could rock big rooms with too. The amp is 85 watts not 95 though (somebody correct me if i'm wrong on this)...also while it's a 1974 and that's old/vintage, it's not a blackface (pre CBS) so it's not as valuable as a '63, '64, '65. Go play a new twin and see if you like it. good luck.
djroge1 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Also, If you have someone to help you fix it up you can always re-sell it for a small profit (may be good to let your friend in on it thought). Why not? buy it, fix it, play it for a while, then sell it for for some $$.
Dynadude Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I say go for it. You can't go wrong with a twin. They are generally pretty tough amps. And while it is true that they don't distort easily, who says that's a bad thing? Clean is what you want most of the time anyway. When you need distortion, hook up some effects, and blow the freakin' windows out!
harmonicchaos Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 I'm actually a clean freak (in both uses of the term). When i want a distorted (or in my case fuzz) tone i use pedals. I'm a pedal person.
RichCI Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Well, if you're into pedals, then a Twin will definitely stay clean at high volume. Are you planning on gigging with this amp? The amp that I use with my band is a 100w Mesa and it's complete overkill, even for a rock band. We're not crazy loud, but we turn up a bit and I've been thinking about a Vox AC 30 or some other master volume amp in that power range just because the Mesa is pretty much ridiculous.
Dynadude Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 The only real drawback of the Twin is the weight. If you need to tote it far, you'd better use a dolly. And you'll want to install a small fan inside for when you use the kickback legs, otherwise it will overheat the power tubes and other components. I put one in mine, and it stays nice and cool.
Murph Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Me and Uncle Ted love a twin. You can crank em'..... Just stand back! Murph.
harmonicchaos Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Okay, I contacted the guy selling the twin reverb and here is his e-mail (note he is asking for 450 or best offer) It is still available, and I can take some pics later today. I never got around to taking the pictures before because all the replies I got early on were scammers trying to cheat me. I'm a little more careful now. Issues: Its been blowing fuses, I am not entirely sure why, but have not really looked into it yet either. Someone told me it might just be the power tubes, which are old. It has one replaced speaker, but I put an original speaker in, so yes, its been replaced, but its a stock speaker. It is missing the master volume push pull knob, and there is no footswitch. There are small cosmetic issues as it was a working amp for a long time before I got tired of lugging it around (its heavy enough, thats for sure) and the reverb tank connection is a little loose, it wiggles free once in a while, especially after moving the amp. I would probably have to crate it to ship it safely, I have not really looked into that either, but I have received a similar item and the shipping was not horrible. I will look into this. Thanks for the interest, let me know if you want the pics. What do you guys think now? Is it still okay and what would you offer him? With all the issues i don't think i'd give him 450. From your experience does this sound fixable? Like i said i know someone who used to fix amps and also have a grandfather who was an electrician and handy man so between the three there would probably be enough man-power.
jefleppard Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 lots of question marks and flags. a decent, working twin should be priced around $700. mint under $1000. seems like a load of electrical issues here. if you have access to a guy with parts and good rates, it might be worth it. twins are awesome. fender has the best clean sound and reverb ever.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 im still selling my jcm800......................... ;D just given a clean bill of health too
harmonicchaos Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 im still selling my jcm800.........................;D just given a clean bill of health too Thanks jesse, but i've never been a big Marshall fan. He e-mailed me back and he's gonna try to get some soundclips up and some pics.
Dynadude Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 If he was gigging the amp it will probably need a filter cap job, and tubes. I would ask about the age of both.
SRV-Zeppelin Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Who cares about the high wattage? I play almost entirely at home, and my amp is 150W (75 each side.) Of course, I don't have a power tube amp (Marshall AVT275) but most tube amps sound good at about 3-4 anyway, which is what I play at.

retrosurfer1959 Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 It sounds like an ok buy on a hard used amp. I would guess that the guy selling it has gigged it hard and it has some real issues that need service and replacement so you'll probably put every dollar you save from the low initial price into the amp to get it repaired and sounding right.
harmonicchaos Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 he hasn't e-mailed me back (it's been 2 or three days) I'm gonna just use some of the money i have to customize my lp and wait until i find a reasonably priced fender or mesa that's in better condition. I'm not gonna spend money on something that may not be fixable.
