I'm not saying I'm going to trade it in there, and I know I could get more on ebay and all that stuff. But I'm jsut curious about how much could I get for a Gibson SG standard, 3 years old and kind of scartched in certain places. Thanks for the help.

GC doesn't pay all those salaries and other overhead by giving you a break. Go to your locally owned guitar store and talk to them.

I have had a great time horse trading with my local music store and gotten deals that shame anything GC would ever do. At the moment I have three great Fender basses, three killer Gibsons, and a Dobro and a '30s Regal (NOT made in Korea!) and GC can go to hell.

at best they'd buy it from you at the same price they buy from gibson' date=' realistically it's probably gonna be a couple hundred less than that[/quote']

why would they do that? they would just buy one from gibson. it would make more sense. they are more likely to SELL yours for a price close to what they can buy one from Gibson for.

you're gonna lose your butt if you trade it in to any dealer. they must be able to mark it up and make a profit. if not, they have no reason to buy it from you. it's not charity. (this applies to independents, and chains).

people want SG standards. sell it yourself in the newspaper, ebay, or craigslist. just be reasonable with your asking price. remember: no one cares if it's "like new". it's a used guitar no matter how good the condidtion. you can't get new prices for it. if you ask a new price for a used guitar, people will just go buy a new one instead.

you say yours is scratched.... so, you have to be even more "reasonable"

I sold a bass to a major vintage dealer here in Nashville recently and was offered 60% of what they would list it for, minus their fee to set it up and string it again. Not too bad for selling to a dealer. I think you're always better off trying to sell it on this web forum, Craigslist or eBay first before dealing with a dealer to resell, because the dealers are not a charity, they have to be able to make money off of buying it and reselling.

Depends on what you plan on buying there like all salespeople there making there profit somewhere on expensive guitars sometimes they will give you very good value on a trade because they are making the profit on the new equipment

I asked about this at my local GC recently. They quoted me about 50% of what it sells on ebay. (i.e., that is their actual policy at the local store.) I was asking about a low-mid range Ibanez, though.

I wouldn't sell it or trade it at GC, unless you are ready to settle for less. I tried this transaction with my Strat last year. I paid $1100.00 for my strat and they only wanted to give me $500.00. :-k

I couldn't do it. [-X

Typically, an MI store will give you no more than 50% of the market value (which is not the MSRP or the MAP prices, as they apply to new instruments... the used guitar market is just like the used car market).

what did you expect? $1100? it's a used guitar and they have to sell it as a used guitar. there are a ton of strats out there. they would probobably sell it for $700 or $750. $500 sounds right for a trade in.

as i mentioned above, it doesn't matter what you paid for it, or how clean it is. they have to give you less than they could buy a new one from fender for. they also have to sell it as a used guitar. no one is going to give them $1100 for a used guitar if they could spend the same $1100 and get a new one.

all music stores are a for-profit business.... not charity. they don't take used guitars just to help you out. it's so they can sell it themselves.

now, if you said they offered you $200 it would be a different story. they can't give you what it would sell for though. if you want full used value, then you have to sell it yourself.

GC manager told me to sell my gear private because their policy was to pay 25% of the market value. If they can sell your guitar for $1000 they will offer you $250 for it.

qft.

Remember, normal markup is 250-280 pct. Since used axes are somewhat iffy as to durability and quality unless provenance is utterly and completely documented, the store is also factoring in some risk.

This is perfectly natural for most "hobby" stores as well. When they buy stamp collections, you might expect to be paid 25 pct of the book value, if you are lucky.
