enchong Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Hi Guys, Need help here... I got into the christmas mood/impulse and bought myself some BOSS effects for my LP Custom shop...problem is I dont know how to do the settings in each effects. I play the rhythm only and we play 70's light rock(no heavy metal) mostly CLEAN. I got a BOSS: CHORUS, ACOUSTIC SIMULATOR and a DIGITAL REVERB. Would greatly appreciate any help on the settings of the above effects. Also, the settings on the amplifier. I have a YAMAHA F100 and a VOX Valvetronic VT30. I use the effects also on gigs where we use a Fender amplifier. Thanks! A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!!!! LETS STRUM THE YEAR AWAY!!! Enchong
enchong Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 Sorry I forgot....I have an EQUALIZER too!!
modoc_333 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 which boss chorus do you have? there are 2 that are currently available. in general, the effects you have will all sound their best in the effects loop of your amp. also, i would suggest keeping the delay and reverb very subtle. when cranked up both of these sound very cheesy and fake. think of them like a woman's makeup: it's best that they aren't noticed. they should just blend in. the EQ may or may not be needed... depending on how you want to use it. i haven't really messed around with the acoustic sim much.
rost73 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Hi, Acoustic Simulator...to convert your electric guitar sound to Acoustic guitar sound...so you can have an acoustic guitar sound thru your LP by using this effect...u just need to choose type of acoustic sound u want from the padal..piezo or jumbo.
RichCI Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 You're really going to have to just play with them and find the sounds that you like. As for the order to put them in, it depends a bit on the results you want and how you intend to use the EQ, but here are a couple examples of how*I* would use them - but that doesn't mean they're "correct" or the only way to use them. Lead boost acoustic sim -> chorus -> reverb -> EQ With the EQ set to be a boost pedal that whacks your amp harder. Set the EQ bands and level control to whatever sort of lead sound you like and click it on to boost your solos. General sound shaping EQ -> acoustic sim -> chorus -> reverb You can swap the EQ and acoustic sim if you like; it depends on what you want and how it works out best The one aspect is keeping the reveb after the acoustic sim and chorus. Since reverb, like delay, is an effect that simulates an environment or room, it should generally be used last for the most realistic effect. Worth noting is that, with the first example I gave, the reverb can end up being a bit washed out if you're overdriving your amp when boosting; in that situation, reverb is best placed in the effects loop if you have one on your amp. Experiment and see what works best for you. Effects are great and making them do things they were never intended to do is a lot of fun. When I was doing studio engineering, I once turned a $3,000 tube mic preamp into a distortion box. Want to see a studio owner's eyes bug out? Make his uber expensive gear distort heavily.
enchong Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Dear Guys, Thanks for your advise... I changed the arrangement of the effects (i.e. from left to right- EQ then AC3 then CH 1 then the Digi Rev RV 5). I also followed all the settings on the dials and I think the output has a better tone now than before.... you are right when the settings are wrong, the tone sounds fake and yes- cheesy. The advise given to me by a friend is that I turn on the EQ always, when I play acoustic I turn on the AC3 and the Chorus but the Rev is OFF. But when I play non-acoustic rhythm i just leave the REV on and the EQ on...the AC3 and Chorus is off. Is this correct??? Just need some advise also on the settings on the EQ... when should I turn it on? what settings is good for clean and rhythm play? They say the EQ gives more body to the tone? Thanks a lot!!! This forum is really helpful to novice guitarists like me. Thanks again!!!
MikeRom Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The EQ will shape your sound to they way you like it so you're gonna have to figure that one out on your own BUT i know that some folks use the EQ as a lead boost by krankin' up the highs and only engaging it when needed for lead work.
BIGBENDS Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Hi Enchong, Congrats on the new toys. I enjoy a few pedals from occasionally, and my Acoustic Simulator makes composing songs which incorporate Electric and Acoustic a breeze. Enjoy. If you have a chance, read these articles from Gibson.com. I think you already got good advice from these guys, but here's the info for future reference. enchong Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!
rightlespaul Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 The best thing is to twist some knobs and find your own settings...
elantric Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Try them out here: http://www.bossus.com/go/vpb-2/ Choose Style: Acoustic
Thundergod Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Man tweak them as much as you can and see what you like best, there are of course certain ways of positioning them so they work better toghether, I am sure I posted a chart sometime ago... I'll look it up on my computer and post it again.
enchong Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 thanks thundergod! will await got for the chart hopefully you will find it in your computer.....elantric...thanks for the site! i have exactly the same pedals as in the Acoustic mode....i just saw that all knobs are at 12 o clock....is this what it really is?
Thundergod Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Hey man, sorry I didnt come back earlier... here it is (hope it helps):
bobv Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Remember after you get the knobs just where you want them, you have to try the pedals in an entirely different order. You'd be amazed how different it can be especially with respect to how the boost/distortion pedals behave before or after the modulation pedals. Conventional wisdom says its good to have something with a buffer early in the effects chain, with the caveat that vintage fuzz pedals won't respond the same way to volume knob tweaks on the guitar to adjust the gain level. There are lots of articles written on it, but believe me there are no rules. Oh, except maybe one rule: you shouldn't coil up any cords on top of the effects in your pedalboard case since it will shift all those knobs around (don't ask me how I know that).
