To clarify, the "solid piece of wood" in question is actually 2 or 3 pices laminated together lengthwise, then shaped and routed before the top is added.

Thx, you are correctomundo. Didn't mean to infer that it was all one piece, just that it wasn't "assembled" like a semi.

If you look at the pic in the link in post no. 2, you'll see that the sides and back are actually quite thick. But yes, virtually all parts of the guitar are cut using computer-controlled routers, so they can replicate the exact thickness every time. That's why "cheap" guitars nowadays are SO much better than "cheap" guitars in the 60's and 70's. Precision with necks, fret positions and body dimensions is easy with computer tools.
