Inspired Casino inside overhaul pots , caps , wiring

After needing to change the toggle switch in my Epiphone Inspired Casino and yet to do that I decided to get a look inside at the wiring and pots .

Ive really got to say the craftsmanship is shooty to say the least as far as the soldering process goes there not much pride in that respect and the wiring well it almost looks like a train wreak not professional at all . JS pots ?? I found in my Casino are 500K and .022 caps ( did not meter measure either but thats whats indicated on them ) with for the most part plastic coated wiring with some shielded . The toggle and input jack are Switchcraft but they look at bit different than what I have here .

It just makes me feel uncomfortable knowing the inside of my Casino looks like a nest compared to my Gibson ES 330 , ES 335 and my Les Paul which looks like quality controlled and professional with high standard parts . Yes without changing these parts this guitar could be fine for years but being a product of the 50s and 60s this doesn't sit well with me .

So at this point this is what I plan to do and change Im fine with the P90 pickups so they will stay and the nut I may change at some point down the road .

4 CTS 500K short shaft pots .... split-short shaft, audio taper potentiometers from CTS. matched to be with in 1% tolerance of each other .

2 Jensen .022 capacitors .... These are foil paper-in-oil caps with silver leads.

Switchcraft toggle and input jack

Will be replacing all existing wire and using silver-plated 20 gauge solid copper buss wire for grounding the pots

Using 1950s style wiring on the process

g6120,

Sounds like a plan. Where are you getting your pots from?

As the best pots that CTS makes (as far as I know) are +9/-1% are you having them custom matched?

I'm also curious as to what percentage taper audio pots you use. So few dealers even mention taper other than audio or linear.

Just wondering,

Willy

The CTS pots have a solid brass shaft and bushing and are all hand matched not custom ordered at 1% tolerance and are 500K no lower so all four pots are within that margin of percentage . The bourns pots I looked over and just don't look to me as good as the CTS but Ive not tred them although they tested close to 500K on my meter which means they were accurate .

  • 3 weeks later...

Today replaced all wiring pots and caps . Found that all pots were between 440 and 480 K none reached 500 K . Caps were very tiny no brand or specs listed on them . The pots two were JS and the other two said made in Korea neither had any brass .

Thin plastic coated wire red black and gray . Toggle and input were Switcgcraft .

Tested after installation everything works well very solid pots have a better smooth feel when turning very noticeable . Replaced with CTS 524K 522K 525K 520K

Noticed much more even taper metered and sound wise with the new CTS pots and the tone with the toggle in each three positions seems a bit more distinctive .

Not a hugh difference but have not gone threw the total gamete as yet but subtle to my ear and I know the inside components are a solid quality and hopefully will last along time .
