Dennis D near Milwaukee
I had to take in my L-7 today, and it's showing some binding separation. My luthier said he's seen an unusual number this year mostly due to the bad winter we've had. More flattop and acoustic archtops guitars than usual coming in with surface cracks, binding separation etc etc. So we talked about those plastic tube humidifiers, and some others. I was wondering - - do they all require keeping the instrument in the case ? So,please what's the budget fix, and then what's the hassle-free option, buy a room humidifier ? Thanks ! SteveFord
Hassle free- entire room. Budget - wet sponge in a plastic container of some sort with a bunch of holes drilled into it with a Rat Shack hygrometer.
L5Larry
Humidify the whole house and be done with it. I've installed one of these in every house I've ever owned, and never had a problem with my guitars (or anything else). I live in the St. Louis area, and our winter climate is not much different than yours. http://www.generalfilters.com/shop-iaq-parts/Models-1040--1040L--1040LH--1040R-Series-Humidifiers_PT754.html?show=parts This is a "passive" unit, no moving parts, motors or sponges. The filter should be replaced every few years, but that's it, set and forget.

It kind of almost works for the whole house. Maybe this year I'll put in one of those! There's already a water line there.
