Anyone got a Rickenbacker 620 or 660?

I just put a 660 on layaway yesterday and I need to feed my obsession while I wait to pay it off.

I didn't really plan on buying when I went to the shop, but this 660 felt like the one for me and I couldn't let it go. The guitar sounds amazing too. The pickups sound real clear with something extra nice about them? Dunno what it is, but I'm in love

The 620 is a rare beast round our way...

Small guitar with top quality build and sounds to boot... [thumbup]

Love it to bits

IMO Rics have real style and class...

It would take me about half an hour to drive to their factory and they're rare over here too! The few stores that do carry rickenbacker tend to only keep one or two in stock and mark the prices way up

Is that how it is where you're at? Or are there none at all?

Good for you, Dub! Ric's are Awesome!! [thumbup][biggrin]

Sorry, I don't have a 620, or 660. Mine are (2) 360-12 strings,

and a 320 "Miami!" Fun Stuff!!

Seeing your pictures was part of what inspired me to get one! To be honest this thread was sort of an invitation for you to post pics to hold me over till I have this guit back in my hands!

OK, talked me into it! [biggrin]

Top (1980) 360-12WB, w/added Toaster pickups, and old style knobs & tailpiece. Middle 1982 320 "Miami" w/added "R" tail piece, and Gold Plastic. Bottom 1982 360-12'64 Reissue...Stock!

Yes, I still have factory original parts, in case I ever want to "go back" to strictly "original" spec's. The "R" tailpiece was added, strictly as a "sanity saving" device. With the original "Accent" vibrato, it wouldn't stay in tune! With the "R" there's no more tuning issues.

Ooowee

They all look great but I wanna play that 360/12 up top!

Mine is the natural maple color

[biggrin] Well, it IS the "prettiest" paint job. But, they all have their

good points. It's odd, that both 360's sound just a little bit

different. I think it's because the "toaster" pickups, on the

top one were replacements, and not "original" spec's. Ric started

back with the original spec's when the '64 Reissue came out. Before

that, the replacement "toasters" were a bit hotter wound. So, I

think that's the main difference. But, they still sound like a Ric,

and like no other!! I've often wondered, if the pickup placement

is a factor, as well. The upper one, has the pickups closer together

due to the neck being further into the body, than the '64 version.

The neck in the upper one, is a bit thicker, more C shapped, with a

rounded heel. The lower one, is thinner, and "flatter" on the back,

and a squared off heel, as was typical in the early '60's. No big

deal, just interesting. There's only about 2 years difference, between

the two. The upper one was purchased in 1980, the lower in 1982.

Cheers,

CB

The pickup placement will definitely affect the sound a bit

My 660 has the toaster pickups, which I really like the sound of. I noticed the 620 has different pickups, not really sure exactly what the difference is, but both types sound good.

Honestly I don't even know if the toaster is a humbucker or single coil but it sounds great. Kinda looks like a humbucker but sounds like a single coil

The new pickups, on your 620 will be the "High Gain" pickups, most likely.

"Toaster" pickups are, essentially lower output single coil. There is a

difference in tone/sound, between the two. It's how they're wound, and the

magnet differences, mostly. But, it will still sound like a "Ric!"

My 360-12WB (the top one, in the photo) came with "High Gain" pickups

originally. I preferred the Toaster tones, for the 12-string, because

that's the tone/sound I grew up on, and that my '60's Ric-12 had.

But, the High Gain pickups are pretty awesome, in their own right. Some

think they sound better, on 6-string Ric's, than the "Toaster's?" You'll

just have to decide if they're what you prefer, or not. They can always

be changed. [biggrin]

Mine is actually the 660, not the 620. It comes stock with the toasters. I haven't made a direct comparison (the store only had a 620/12 and my 660) but I definitely like the sounds out of the toasters.

I'll check out those links when I get back from work, thanks for the info!

Yeah, Sorry [blush] , for the mix up. The 620 (and most other non-'60's reissue Ric's),

now come with the High Gain's.

Are you getting a 660-12, or 6 string version?

I've never seen a better paint-job on a Ric.

That is BY MILES the nicest coloured Ric I've ever seen. Why the Hell don't they make more like that?

Stunning!

The 6. I considered a 620/12, but I'd probably just use it as a 6 string mostly anyways. I think I'd like a 330/12 in the future though :o

And Pip, you should see the 660 in fireglo at davesguitar.com

I was gonna buy that but felt like it was too gaudy for me

Maple Glo 620 here... [thumbup]

It has the Hi Gain single coils which IMO are somewhat similar to Gretsch Dynasonics... [thumbup]

More than slightly Beatle-esque and a welcome alternative to the Fender/Gibson assumptions... <_<

Supply seems to ebb and flow in the UK...

Great guitars...!!

Congrats. I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. Had the pleasure of playing a used 600 series Rick a few years ago. They wanted under $1k for it. Wish I would have jumped on it.

Tanks, mang

You should have pounced dude! The 620 is $1,400 new, so you could find one for under 1k again

Now I'm trying to decide if I should just trade my Tele in on this to lessen the blow to my wallet. Frankly it plays way better, looks cooler, and sounds like what I wish my Tele sounded like. Still love the Tele, but dunno if I'd actually miss it when I take the Ric home
