Fullmental Alpinist
I believe it's called "patterned mahogany" or something like that. I think I'm in love. FMA
Buc McMaster
Uh huh. Looking at ukes, I see. Like mahogany? Check out this flamed variety.......Collings, of course...... Eeeeooowww that's some pretty wood! Been debating myself on ordering one of these to go along with the koa one. Yes indeed they are expensive, but gee wilikers, Mr Wilson, they are flawlessly built and sound wonderful. Like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for. Fullmental Alpinist
Might be quilted. I don't remember what it was described as, but definitely nice. And actually it is a Collings as well, I just Photoshopped out the label in case anyone was offended by the nonGibson brand. I sure wish Gibson would retool and make some. Like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for. Yuppers. I'd like a relatively inexpensive hog tenor uke (too lazy to learn new chords). But the only quality one readily available seems to be the Martin IZ commemorative. $1.5k. Ouch, but I'm shy of buying cheap instruments, after buying my 'Bird. It's such a pleasure to play and just look at a quality guitar. Here's a photo of my strat in front of a 1900s Steinway grand piano made of something like tiger stripe mahogany. It's supposedly extinct. I keep looking at it and wondering how many guitars could be made out of it. FMA
Jayyj
Luthiers Mercantile used to sell Beeswing Mahogany sets that was some of the most attractive looking wood figure I'm come across. It was pretty expensive though. Be interesting to know what stiffness these figured boards are, whether they might be a little denser and more Koa like in tone? These days a nice, classic looking Honduras Mahogany grain does it for me just fine though!

I have to consider stiffness in addition to drop-down-dead beauty? Aargh! FMA
