New J45

So, about a month ago I put down a deposit on a 2013 J45 Custom. Ended up paying $1,250 and then ran into a financial pickle and knew it was going to take way too long and be too stressful to get paid off.

So, my guy at GC in Orlando was good enough to work with me. I told him to order me a new J45 Standard. Turns out, he just got one in on Monday. So I'm going up today or tomorrow to give it a play (it's already being held for me because of the money I had put down on the Custom). Should have it paid off in two weeks :)

I know the $600 difference between the two models might not be a lot for some people, but, for me, it's the difference of an entire pay check. And I really think I will be happy with the J45 Standard.

I think you will be happy with the Standard, too. The J-45 in mahogany really is the quintessential Gibson slope. Those who get the rosewood Custom want the J-45, but something different. And you can rest a little easier with that gracious return policy at GC. Good luck, and remember: POIDH.

Is there any other way?

Don't worry, J45 standards get consistently good reviews here. There's a fair number of people that seem to prefer them to the J45 TV. Play them all against each other. We'd be interested in your thoughts.

Just got back from playing one that rolled off the line less than three weeks ago.

I feel I must have it. It spoke to me. Seriously.

I think the latest bursts are looking real good- for a while there, they got a bit mono-chrome. I see a return of just a hint of orange.

Why, this one's even got the pickguard right!

But it's got "the" sound, that it does. Dang...

You'll need something to go with your new capo!

Pickguard in the right place? No way!

I'm heading up today to play it for the first time.

Haven't even seen it. lol I'm not even sure what year it is but, from what I understand, it's brand new, just arrived on Monday and my guitar guy was the only person who played it. So, hopefully the stock strings aren't shot if no one else has played it.

It did tell me "it sounds amazing".

It sounds like the TV and Custom models are not options to the OP. If the GC does have both a Custom and a TV model, which is unlikely, I would think trying to compare them to the single Standard they just got in would be a waste of time. I bet there are lots of good YouTube videos comparing the sound of the three different models if that's what you're looking for. You can also find clips on the Ebony and the Pelham Blue J45 models.

That said the thread below, Manufacturing Variations J45 Standard" has some excellent insights into differences in what we hear when comparing different guitars that would appear to be identical.

Amen on the J45 Standard. Awesome instrument. This is one guitar that is typically everything good you hear about it. Had mine for almost two years now and I play it a lot. Great stage guitar and great sitting-at-home guitar. Folk, country, rock & roll. It does it all. Congrats. [thumbup]

Can't go wrong with either IMHO. If you want the Custom someday, and have the $$ to do so, the good news is the Gov-u-ment hasn't passed a law yet to prohibit that purchase!! [biggrin]

Glad you were able to work things out for one that you could swing right now. [thumbup]

Thanks guys.

I'm really excited to finally be getting this after about a year and a half of researching, playing and waiting to be in a good financial place.

It was very important to me to find the right guitar that suited me the best. As a working musician who writes, records and performs, I know that this will probably be my main guitar for a number of years.

Great sound. And the Martin t-shirt while playing a Gibson is a nice touch ;)

I think I broke some universal rule doing that! Honestly I didn't even notice until I uploaded the pic.
