charlie brown Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Saw a Great Documentary "20 Feet From Stardom," about some of the Best backup singers in the business! Merry Clayton, Lisa Fisher, Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Tata Vega, Claudia Lennear, etc. People we've all heard, even if we didn't already know their names. Some, of course, are quite familiar. It has some interesting commentary on the "Music business" as well. If you have Netflix, it's on the Instant View (Streaming) right now. Or, I think you can get it, via the DVD, as well. Youtube has it, as well, for a $3.95 or so, fee. Check it out, if you at all interested! CB
pauloon Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Will do....any mention of Clare Torry?....one of the most ''emotive'' vocal performances I've ever heard......yet no words!

quapman Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Thanks CB. Looks very interesting. Got that on my must see list. Netfilx you say?
charlie brown Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 Thanks CB. Looks very interesting. Got that on my must see list. Netfilx you say? Yeah, it's on their "Streaming" list (as of now). I think it's probably available, in their DVD (mail out) listings, too. Enjoy...I did!! CB
charlie brown Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 It's pretty matter of fact=sobering, too...when you think of all the great singers (just a few of which are shown), that can't seem to "make it," beyond "backup" (though some, of course, do), it's kind of astonishing! A bit like "Great guitar players" (or, other musicians) in that regard. There's just No guarantee's, ever...regardless of Talent! CB
L5Larry Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Just put it on the Netflix DVD AND streaming lists. Thanks for the heads-up. It would also be interesting find out about the ones that DID make the 20 foot walk. I remember seeing a Don Henley concert where Sheryl Crow was the "white girl" backup singer, and looked very odd and out of place with the dance moves.
flyingarmadillo Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Saw it in the theater and my wife bought the BluRay. Geat stuff about backup singers and about why some of them who tied to be out front didn't make it.
matonanjin Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I saw the previews to it and thought it looked interesting. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to stream it. Thanks.
L5Larry Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Just put it on the Netflix DVD AND streaming lists. Thanks for the heads-up. Just watched it last night. Very interesting (and entertaining), although I found it a little narrow in focus. The three or four ladies they profiled recorded on an incredible array of songs and hits, but I would have liked to see them dig a little deeper into more of the "no names". All in all, certainly worth the view.
charlie brown Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Lisa Fisher should be a STAR!!!! [thumbup] [thumbup] CB
L5Larry Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Lisa Fisher should be a STAR!!!! [thumbup] [thumbup] Well she is a Grammy winner. I know that doesn't equate to being a "Star", but it certainly shows success, accomplishment, and recognition by the industry. Anyway... After streaming it on Netflix, I wondered if the DVD had any "extras", so I put it on my Netflix DVD list also. For those of you who have access to the DVD, there ARE some great extras on it, outtakes, extended interviews, other artists who's interviews were left on the cutting room floor, and a really good "New York Times Live" TV segment with Darlene, Merry and Lisa. The "extras" alone are well worth the rental fee, or maybe even purchase price.
