Rabs Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Talking of Gibson prototypes...... Do you remember that Les Paul prototype that Gibson had pictures of on their site... This one well it seems that it was actually sold to someone? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LessPaulProto/ these are the features Gibson Custom Less Paul Prototype Solidbody Electric Guitar Features: ✓Hand-carved by Gibson Custom Shop master luthier Bruce Kunkel ✓Luscious book-matched flame maple top ✓Ultra-playable '59 neck profile ✓BurstBucker 1 and 2 pickups ✓Nitrocellulose lacquer finish ✓Hardshell Case Included
Levism Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I recall this being available for a short time last year. I went in looking for one recently and couldn't find any in Canada.

I kinda thought it was a one off... I wonder what that sold for? I was actually interested in playing it too, it looks interesting to me.
Blueblooded Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I really liked it. Think it has a lot of the same lines as the Framus Panthera.
krock Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Looks like it would make a very comfortable guitar to play sitting because of all the contouring
mKwatra427 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Eeeesch. Personally think it looks horrible by Gibson standards but also very comfortable by the same. Neck joint???

I suspect you might be thinking of something else, Levism. That one was a well-documented one-off special-build project which didn't go beyond the prototype stage. There was a lot of discussion about it here and, perhaps surprisingly, there was a lot of information available about it from Gibson CS. Most stages of the build process were captured on 'film' including images showing just how much of the body was removed - and it was a lot! I wonder who managed to snaffle it? Mike Slubowski, perhaps?...... P. EDIT : Just by way of confirmation this is cut'n'pasted from the link; "Own an incredible one-of-a-kind guitar - the Gibson Custom Less Paul Prototype!"
mKwatra427 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 … "Own an incredible one-of-a-kind guitar - the Gibson Custom Less Paul Prototype!" ... 'Less Paul'? Is that an unfortunate typo or alternative marketing? :P

You may be right then. My dealer was telling me about a les paul that was released for a limited run in 2013 after I went looking for a ESP LTD 1000 ce. The body was the same scales as a lp but it was very thin. I showed me some pics and they looked very similar to rabs. I'll follow up with him and put a name to it.

That sounds to me like nothing more than a Les Paul Custom Lite that they made a limited run (again) in 2013. I like those myself, but they are readily available on eBay etc. It's prime marketing point is the body size/thickness of an SG... (more or less) They actually weigh nearly as much as a standard Les Paul... Only a couple pounds different at best... They have a single tone control only and a coil tap switch in place of the bridge pickup tone control knob... These things have been being produced since The Norlin era and again right after Gibson USA took over in 1986 for another several years and a couple of runs. They have come in some somewhat unique colors in those runs in the past. This latest I believe was only Ebony & White, or possibly only Ebony... They also used to come with Ebony fretboards in previous runs but in 2013 only in Rosewood... We've talked about 'em in here before, somewhat recently too... I do like the looks of the prototype in this thread too. I think it'd be neat to try and I'm wondering why they didn't move forward with it to see how it sells...
SteveFord Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 That guitar is pretty ugly but it's growing on me the more I look at it. It almost has an Ovation thing going for it from the side view.

This is the guitar I was thinking about. Front its a lp on its side, same thickness as an sg. The prototype looks very interesting indeed.

Yeah I quite like it too... I think the trick is not to see it as a Les Paul, but as a cool new type of Gibson.. Calling it a Les Paul doesn't really make sense and will only annoy the traditionalists.. They need a different model name for it... The Less Paul is funny but they cant call a serious new line that :) Can anyone think of a good model name for it? (a serious one ) How about a snub nose (or horn as it were) double cut :)

That looks like a solid body Ovation from the side.
Rabs Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Ohh.. looks like they did a Black one too http://www.kantorguitars.com/guitars/kantor-vault/private-collection/gibson-bruce-kunkel-less-paul

duane v Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 If you guys happen to see one of those for sale, please let me know

(not the guitar, the name) Maybe; "Earless Wonder"
Guest Farnsbarns Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Do you work for Gibson? Unless things have changed Duane is a mod on this forum but not on the Gibson payroll?
duane v Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Do you work for Gibson? As Farns stated I do not work for Gibson..... However I only play Gibson and Epi guitars
duane v Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Ok to bad Gibson builders are my heroes they make the best guitars in the world. It would be nice to be able to thank them personally :) Also it has been suggested that I receive discounts and or free guitars for being a mod...... This is completely untrue..... For the record I pay for all my Gibson instruments, nor have I ever asked for any special considerations.... Nor have I've been offered a free guitar.
duane v Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I think you totally should be offered one, nothing special just something like a Gibson 1960 Custom Shop Les Paul Reissue with premium AAA top. Im pullin for ya brotha! LOL!!!! Every Gibson is special IMO, which is why they are worth paying for....
Jimi Mac Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 bingo Bango ! This is the guitar I was thinking about. Front its a lp on its side, same thickness as an sg. Here's a 1987 Custom Lite on eBay right now. Pretty sharp looking even if a tad over-priced (in my ignorant opinion) @ $3,100. The owner has changed out the hardware to nickel for his own taste but has all the original gold stuff and this one has an Ebony fretboard...
