Slash Is God Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Hi guys, I've been wondering which neck profile my Gibson SG Standard is. I was originally under the impression that it was a 50s profile, but I recently bought a Gibson Les Paul Classic which of course has a 60s profile, and they feel very similar. Is there a way to know for sure? It was made in 1999, and here is the serial number: 92969435 Any ideas?
Jon S. Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 The 1999 SG Standard does indeed have a 50's neck profile.
Jimi Mac Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Keep in mind neck profiles by these titles are a base point they go after and there is enough straying for any exacting standard for pieces right off the line one after another that are supposedely the same spec to feel very different. I've been told by people that have played '59's and '60 and '69 Les Pauls that the necks from the factory listed as '50's, '60's - Slim Taper, and '59 are pretty rough attempts at a reproduction and are generally very different from the real deal... Not that I would know what a '59 Les Paul neck (or earlier) or a real 60's Les Paul neck feels like, but there is alot of those terms bandied about in contemporary model choices and personally I think it's a touch misleading... I think, from my own research and my common-sense, that it's a rought approximation at best...
Slash Is God Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Thanks for that guys, I thought it was!! Can I ask, how it is you know? Just so I know for future reference really so I can learn myself. Is it that all SG's made that year were 50s profile, or something else? I'm one of those people who don't want just the answer but the process too :-) thanks again!
