EuroAussie Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Well cottage pickin' at least where we had our first visit to the summer getaway to get it ready for the season. Amazing that we were able to get there in March already, often it still snows here ! But I did take the Martin to kick back a bit and have a fiddle in between leaf raking and that sort of stuff. I had an idea to quickly run through a medley of fingerpickin' tunes we play at our gigs, but Mrs EA had to ruin it and cut it short.... Still gives you an idea of the tone of the J-40. It was recorded only with the Iphone (which I only just got and still figuring out how to use this toy). Listening back Id say its quite representative but in 'real' life its more sparkly on the high end, seems the Iphone cuts out the highs quite a bit. But I do like this guitar, 24 hours later, no buyers remorse, to me the tone is really, really sweet. The notes are full and juicy, but not dull, muddy or killed by bass frequencies, very balanced. Anyway, here's a quick one, quicker than planned thanks to the Mrs ... cheers, EA ps: excuse the retarded looking smiling face.
ParlourMan Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Sounds cracking, EA. Very 'Martin' sound of course but the 40 series are really nifty guitars. Sparkly indeed. Picking is also comfier than it was many months ago. Looks like a good buy to me. Not a mention of chocolate either. ;) Bravo!
retrorod Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Good vid EA,.... nice, realistic capture of the moment type thing. I wish I had a "summer getaway"..... Congrats on the Martin. Me thinks that you 'like it'
duluthdan Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Nice robust Martin Rosewood full spectrum sound there.
kebob Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Yep, definitely has the Martin scooped sound going on -- nice full sound without the bass being muddy. Sounds a lot like my HD-28. Give it a few years and it'll open up and sound even better. Nice guitar mate.
EuroAussie Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Give it a few years and it'll open up and sound even better. Nice guitar mate. Actually theres already 10 years on her, and softened up quite well. This was one of the reassons why I bought it as I dont liek the tone of brand new Martins, for too tight and stiff. But Im sure it will get only better with age, no doubt.
ParlourMan Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Sounds open enough to me. Price permitted I'd have been quite tempted by that myself......

Rambler Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Nice pick and nice git. Clear, artculate., ringing.
sjl200 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Nice one, love those j40's Got mine new in 86 and it does get better with age......
EuroAussie Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Nice one, love those j40's Got mine new in 86 and it does get better with age...... Cheers. Interstingly I got home yesterday, picked up the Martin, had a fiddle and thought ... oooh, this tone kinda sucks .. today. Not sure what happened but I suddenly heard the Martin tone I never liked. Bass heavy, lacking character, single dimenisonal. Got worried I made a foolish, rushed mistake. Decided to go to bed. Next morning I played the Martin again and it sounded totally different, hearing the sparkle, richness of what grabbed me in the music store. Anyway, there is a point there ... your ears can really play funny buggers with you sometimes, and if your guitars sounds crap sometimes best to put it down and come back to it next day. Chances are your ears are having a bad day, thats happened to me quite a few times now !
