HrMadsenDK Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Got my hands on this amazing guitar a few months ago, but like a lot of other Custom Gibsons, very little information is available about this guitar. I know it's made by Ren Ferguson for speciel customers at Summer NAMM '08. I know it's no. 5 out 6 and it's a Master Archetype Custom. I know that that it has rosewood back and sides, and probably ebony fretboard. But besides that I know very little about this guitar - does anyone else know something about this guitar? (It's the best sounding guitar I've ever touched btw...much better sounding than my Martin Authentic D-28 '41 and my Doves in flight)
Buc McMaster Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Good looking guitar! That said, no rosewood guitar will ever be a Hummingbird to me.
HrMadsenDK Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Good looking guitar! That said, no rosewood guitar will ever be a Hummingbird to me. Well, I guess that the Hummingbird Custom Koa isn't a Hummingbird as well? But yeah, I see your point and it isn't a Hummingbird in a traditional sense like old school Birds, but soundwise it beats every guitar I've tried - Including Hummingbird Koa, Hummingbird standard, Doves in flight, Martin D-28 1941 authentic and Taylors top-end CE's. So in a sense you could call it a Gibson/Martin hybrid because of the rosewood and the sound is somewhere between my Dove and my authentic, but just many times better than the two guitars
JuanCarlosVejar Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I can tell you that that the specs seem to be the same as the gibson hummmingbird custom koa ... but with rosewood back and sides . last year they did a maple edition with a sunset burst JC

music4love Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 All I can say is BEAUTIFUL!! I am not a rosewood gal myself. For a Hummingbird it has to mahogany for me too. I wish Gibson would do a quilted mahogany version like that.

I wish Gibson would do a quilted mahogany version like that. Maybe it's because I originally am a bass player, so the darker sound from the rosewood suits me even more than the mahogany - but again...I'm a bit of a crazy guy...I've got a precision bass with walnut neck, james trussart guitars and Taylor GT-8 Baritone in my "collection", so maybe a mahogany Bird wasn't special enough for me
jchabalk Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 kinda like a short-scale D41 with a little something extra Looks pretty awesome. i don't usually go for those but that one seems to have a good balance to the bling somehow. glad you like it
zombywoof Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Good looking guitar! That said, no rosewood guitar will ever be a Hummingbird to me. I gotta agree. When was the last time you saw a rosewood Martin D-18. Good reason for that - it would not be a D-18.
DaveRoach Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Wow what a beauty....Stunning Not going to ask, but if I won a lottery
HrMadsenDK Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 I guess that I'm not as fanatic about a Hummingbird needing to be mahogany as others here, but I understand why you'll feel that way. I just absolutely love this guitar, it has this great, clear sound in all areas that I haven't found in any others acoustics (yet). After playing the Hummingbird for the last month or so, I played on my Martin D-28 Authentic yesterday and it was almost too boomy and took a bit of getting tuned back in on the Martin sound. So "true" Hummingbird or not, I can't think of a much better combination of looks, sound and feeling, I guess this is as close to my perfect acoustic guitar that I've been. As for the price, I fortunately didn't have to win the lottery to buy this guitar. The price was around $7372, but I traded in my Taylor Richie Sambora Signature (amazing limited guitar, but the old pickup-system in sounded nowhere as good as L.R. Baggs element fx), so I didn't have to pay that much for this guitar and it's so much better in almost areas (the action on the Taylor was faster though). But you also have to remember that we have more taxes etc. in Denmark, so it would cost a bit less in the US (probably around the retail price of a Martin D-42).
Hall Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Fine looking Gibson Hummingbird Custom Supreme. Enjoy your new Gibson guitar as the instrument it is and refer to it by the name its builder assigned it.
Phelonious Ponk Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 It's really pretty...and Custom Supreme Master...it's got two more adjectives than most. :) P

Don't mind us. Not slighting the guitar in any way. Just those of us who are stuck in our ways and get our panties in a wad when Gibson veers too far from the original design. I just miss the days when about the only decision you had to make between models was did you want it in a burst or au natural top.

Let the Martins be boring. P
MR GIBS Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Good looking guitar! That said, no rosewood guitar will ever be a Hummingbird to me. Yeah, that said - it's a bird but it is not "humming" I am sure that beast sounds terrific!!!
zombywoof Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I hate that choice. Gibsons should be bursts. Let the Martins be boring. P For me, not if it is a cherry burst. Sorry but I will pick a natural top over one of these bursts any day of the week. I think this is the probably what made me choose a '63 B45-12N over the '64 burst version I ran across at about the same time despite the fact the '64 had the fixed bridge and the '63 the trapeze tailpiece.

GibsonMOJO Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 That is one of the sexiest guitars I've ever seen
HrMadsenDK Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 That is one of the sexiest guitars I've ever seen And it looks even sexier IRL :)
celia Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 hi, Do you want to sell this guitar? i have collected a J45 Master archetype and a J60 Master archetype which were all built and signed by Ren Ferguson. I like yours very much. if you does, please reache me at celiacelia2014@yahoo.com thx. Celia
OldCowboy Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 That is truly a breathtaking guitar, based on appearance alone! It's the kind of instrument that might well manage to lead a hardcore vintage purist like me away from the path of righteousness. If the sound manages to be as good as the looks, the spell might well be complete. If my notion that all acoustic guitars are inherently female holds true, that one is a homewrecker for sure. Having said all that, I shall depart this thread - virtue intact - with all possible haste.
