DRC Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I've always admired Sean Watkins' playing and have been accustomed to seeing him with Bourgeois and a couple others, but never a Gibson until recently. Here is is with what looks like a J-45 that sounds incredible. But then he's ultra picky (no pun intended) about guitars and wouldn't expect anything less. Also looks like he may be using monel strings. Love the shim fix on the high E nut slot. I've had to do this many times. :) Sure happy Nickel Creek is back!! DC
celticrogues Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Cool video, thanks! That old Gibson is amazing! The credits on the new album say he uses Elixir strings but he may have something different on there. Nickel Creek posted a picture to Facebook earlier today of a rehearsal for their performance tonight on Jimmy Fallon and Sean looked like he was holding this J45 -maybe we'll hear it again tonight! -Mike

cunningham26 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I've heard a few interviews with Sara Watkins where she talks about how bluegrass circles can be a bit snobby about what you're playing, so when they were younger they bent to the expectation. But now I think the talent outshines the tool and I've only seen him play that J45 the past few years.
DRC Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 A BIT snobby? Sarah is being kind, but then she has to watch what she says during interviews. Back in my bluegrass days, I remember a couple dyed-in-the-wool traditional circles here in northern Alabama that wouldn't allow anyone to sit in if they didn't have a Martin, and preferably a D-28. They were adamant about it. Haven't been involved in several years, but I believe things have loosened up considerably. DC
