Auditioning a bass player

Over the last two weeks we've auditioned over 16 bass players, and I'm quite surprised how many talented bass players there are in SoCal. Last night we auditioned our last three bass players, and we still have bass players calling to get an audition.... But the amount of time and energy it has taken has been unbelievable [scared]..... We finally nailed it down to two prospects and we have them both coming back for final auditions then we make our pick. Our current bass player that will be departing is finishing up two more shows with us, so that's helped so that we could be more selective..... But we finished up at 1:30 AM and the relief of finally coming to a finality is a welcoming site..... I hope we wont have to go through this again for awhile [blink]

That is surprising. My brother played bass in our band. When I wanted to get the band together a few years ago he didn't want to do it. So we tried auditioning a bunch of players. The problem for us is that we play a lot of Rush. It's impossible to find a player who can nail down Geddy Lee licks (my brother is really good). So I begged my him and he's doing it now.

In my area, it's kinda of a rural area. Bassists are few and far between. and as you enter in the different factors of age, musical taste, ability, desire ... the selection pool gets shallower ... you wind up just taking what you can get and hoping for the best. hate to say it, but sometimes it comes to that.

I've always found bassists to be a different breed for sure...

They march to the beat of their own drum as much as drummers do!

A good one makes all the difference in the world!

That backbone is imperative in holding everything together tight!

Good luck, Duane! I cross my fingers for you and your band. I hope you will find the one featuring the abilities matching your music and the special chemistry with your drummer. The latter is what creates magic to my experience, seeing both sides as drummer in one band and bass player in another.

Bass players can be different types. Rhythmic playing along with a drummer, Lead backing the lead player mostly. I like the Lead style bass playing myself. The drums carry enough of the rhythm. The lead style works better with trio, and 4 piece bands.

We like this female bass player..... when she auditioned I dont think we've ever sounded better..... She understood dynamics and great meter.... she wasn't as technically good as the others but she was more rounded..... great singer too.

That sounds pretty good. And vocals as well. Tech. can come with familiarity of playing with your group. That's how some players get into the bands' sound flow, or groove..

I wish I would get it. Of course I have other motives. I want Duane to teach me how to play guitar the right way!

I've got so many bad habits....lol..... but some how I've been able to incorporate those "bad habits" into a somewhat coherent

player.... [scared]
