Tman Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Played a gig Saturday night to raise money for the Arkansas chapter of Memory Keeper's - an Alzheimer's charity. We raised about $17,000 and 375 people showed up. It was fairly heavily advertised. I really miss playing in a band as it was an absolute blast. Here are a few photos. Thanks to anyone who helped a few weeks ago when I was concerned about learning the songs. I played out of a Bognar Line 6, 30 watt amp that was DI into the board. Tube amp with great over driven sound. Ears are still ringing. My LP. Old faithful didn't let me down. Best guitar I've ever owned. The guy to the right and I used to play in a band from 1976 to 1979. Then got back together for this once a year gig 3 years ago. He is an amazing guitar player and singer. Borrowed surf green strat. Had to bring some Southern California to the South.
rct Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Very nice! Loves me some benefit playin myself, I'll go out anytime for a fundraiser with the old farts I used to run around with. rct
'Scales Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Congratulations on the gig and the fundraising Tman. Looks like a good venue too if the lighting rig is anything to go by.
Tman Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Thanks rct, 'Scales and vangoghsear! It's a really nice venue. Had an experienced sound guy and a nice stage. Even made me, very short compared to the other guys, look ok! It's in an area of Little Rock that used to be abandoned warehouses and now includes the Clinton Presidential library and a bunch of restaurants. Great place to pig out on fried catfish We took a band photo while there.
milod Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Super on the gig, super on the cause. Sounds like the venue was developed after I left that region in '88. I used to spend a day or two a week in LR for biz. Never had a real nite off to check music venues though. And I've a hunch "crowd control" is better than in the 80s and first half of the 90s. m

Crowd control used to be crowd out of control. Now police and 20 something's are pretty civil. A bunch of girl's just want to have fun which was good by me.
'Scales Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Tman - 375's an enormous crowd by the standard of gigs I usually go to watch (outside of major cities for inetrnational acts), let alone play at! - whats the biggest crowd you've played to and what was it like?
milod Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Yeah... There were times and places "downtown" and otherwise "near the capitol" I wouldn't have cared to go with a submachine gun and license to do whatever I cared to do were I stark raving mad. It'd still have been too dangerous IMHO, and as intelligent as along the lines attacking a volcano's pyroclastic flow with a squirt gun and handkerchief. m

It was crowded and it's a pretty big venue by Little Rock standards. When older bands that used to be famous come through Little Rock, they often play there. Great equipment. Full bar and restaurant adjacent to the place. I think max it holds is about 450. The venue donated the whole thing. Loads of 50 something professionals came and bought things at silent auction and bought $35 tickets! All for the cause. Largest gig I ever played at was The Murray Rock and Jam located at the grounds next to the Murray Lock and dam on the Arkansas River, July 4th 1979. It was a battle of the bands of sorts. Estimated 10,000 people. Pure adrenaline. We sped up everything. There are some deteriorated videos on you tube under Roxx (our name at the time). Some of them pan the crowd. By far the biggest I ever played for. 3 of the 4 band members played Saturday. What a trip it was!

Come to think of it, I should have been worried. It has changed dramatically now. Downtown has orbea nationwide bike distribution center complete with euro coffee shop inside.
'Scales Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Just checked out Roxx's Jumpin Jack Flash - cool stuff (on a hot day by the looks) - You on the Flying V I assume. Great memories I'm sure and nice to have on Youtube to show the grandkids et al.
Rosemarie Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 From the big smile on your face, it looks like you were havin' a blast! Glad you got to do some rockin' out!
Karloff Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 i like doing benefits too. have played a few benefits for a local homeless shelter last few years. good cause...
Tman Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 Thanks folks! It was really a blast and I get a big high out of the whole experience. Once a year makes it that much more meaningful. "Scales it was 104 degrees (or so I'm sure it is recorded somewhere!) and humid. Typical Arkansas summer day. Mom was there in a wool dress. Luckily she had water. I think even my Dad was there. I was playing the V. I miss that guitar. What's funny is that those kids sitting on their father's shoulders are now in their 30's and early 40s.
