Wall hangers

EVOL!

I am getting my basement rehabbed (new floor, drywall ceiling, and cleanup walls). The music room is down there and my wife has been on me to keep the new room tidy. No problem; so I think a good idea would be to wall mount my guitars.

Which wall mounts do you use for your guitars or which ones do you recommend?

These Hercules ones are great. Weight of the guitar makes the little arms close so the guitar can't fall off. I trust them with my '64 Melody Maker, if that says anything...

I use String-Swings...

They come in either metal or wood accoutrements and I've never had a problem with them...

Hercules is a great hanger. I've used the string swing ones too and they're good too. Some kinds of foam rubber can hurt the nitro finish on Gibsons. The Hercules hangers are pretty finish-friendly.

I only have tried one and that was Fretrest.

It was easy to install and works great. I just needed to be sure it was strong enough for my heavy duty application. :---)

My music room has 17 hangers in it. They are a mixture of Swing String hangers and what every was cheap on Ebay. The rubber on them is also a mixture of different types of foam rubber. So far I have never had any finish issues but I do check and move the guitars around regularly. The biggest worry I had wasn't the hanger failing but the cheese-ball dry wall anchors, they all seem to come with, pulling out of the wall. So I attached all the hangers to a hunk of 6" Brazilian Cherry and then attach the Cherry to the wall at the wall studs using 4" bolts. This is much more sturdy... and matches my floors better. [biggrin]

Nothing against anyone who uses the Hercules Hangers but I don't like them at all. It's annoying to me to have to lift the guitar up a little to get it to come off the wall and I really see no advantage to it. They floor stands are ever worse. Just a preference thing I guess.

Also EVOL... be sure to watch the humidity in that basement room.

I use the String Swings, and have never had a problem with lacquered necks or with the anchors pulling away from the wall. I did attach some of the hangers to studs for my heavier basses. Searcy definitely has the best idea - his guitars will stay put during earthquakes! msp_thumbup.gif

There are some that think wall-hanging is a bad thing, and that guitars should be kept in their cases. Mine have been wall-hanging for several years without any ill effects, and I've found that I'll play each of them more often just because they're so accessible. Another benefit - all my Gibsons came with cases, but I have 4 other basses that didn't, and I won't use a "gig-bag"; one hardshell case is all I need for them - that saves a lot of space & money. msp_biggrin.gif

The Hercules has a foam that won't harm a finish also. I use their stands, not the hangers. If I did use a hanger, the Hercules would be my choice. [thumbup]

I've got a Hercules one. Having to lift the guitar doesn't bother me, you get used to it pretty quickly. They are quite pricey compared to many of the other mounts, so if you've got a lot that you're going to need then that might be a factor for you. I also used a lot of glue and wall plugs when screwing it into the wall because I didn't trust the 3 screws that came with it

That would be my concern too, about trusting the suppled anchors. Wall plugs etc., would be my choice also. [thumbup]

Another vote for the Hercules hangers. I was sitting in this room during a couple of the recent CA earthquakes and these things never moved. My concern when I first put them on the wall was side to side movement in a quake, but it didn't happen.

I use the String Swingers, but instead of the plastic anchors, I use a toggle bolt that flares out behind the drywall. Solid as a rock.

I have three good used ones<two with the toggle bolts> if you can use them and pay for the shipping, they are yours.

They are just sitting on a shelf. Let me know, BRC

I've used the anchors and they are solid. But usually I just use long screws (2") into a stud instead. If you plan your wall around the studs (most often 24" apart on interior walls) you can fit a lot of guitars on a wall and still feel safe.

My Music room is also in my basement and I also keep it tidy. I don't hang my guitars I keep them in their cases. Now my question is, how many of you clean the dust off your guitars on a regular basis? And that is probably why I don't hang them.

As one who hung his handmade acoustic on the wall only for it to fall...the endpin went right through...and it's a strong guitar. It was ok the guy had put an end fillet in where the endpin is so it was totally repairable but it changed the tone of the guitar, cost me money and I felt completely stupid too...

I am here to tell you folks that if you must use wall-mounts do it 5000% too strong (like Searcy and like Surf says)...I really do not like the look of some of these single-and-three-screw jobbies, but ok they're 100% reliable...until they're not.

I found out. Do NOT let this happen to you. Sure they look nice on the wall and they're handy but unless you have a room like Searcy and do it real good, they are mostly safer in their cases.

Actually, a 2" soft paint brush works wonder in about 30 seconds.

If my guitars were kept in cases, they'd be in the closet and more than likely get forgotten about, and rarely if ever played.

Dust them? Why? They aren't furniture. They are musical instruments. I play them. I only put them in their cases when I am taking them somewhere. Otherwise I hang them so they are handy, or lean them in a corner, or a lean them against an amp, or lay them on the couch. I wipe them down when I change strings, but other than that I don't see the point or need in dusting them.
