duluthdan Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Visited Wildwood Guitars in Colorado today and played an astounding holy-s--- guitar. The hummingbird TV had a robust edge and definition and sounded and felt like it had been played in for years. Very "open" not at all tight. 2 years ago I was at that shop and played like 7 different Birds, and bought my Jackson Browne. If this one had been around then, it would have left with me. Great true Cherry Burst, not at all weak or faded, stunning guitar top to bottom. Almost feel like making the 360 mile round trip to pick up and trade away the JB, it's that good. Someone please hurry and buy this square shoulder dream before it starts to haunt my dreams. http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/products/13223021.php?CategoryID=435&n=0
E-minor7 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Man, it's gorgeous - and I know the Bird has been rumbling inside you for years. . . And I honestly believe post-11 Birds are 'better', more open and generous than the earlier. A pretty convincing pattern of investigation tells me so. . . But to trade the JB, , , mmmmm, 2 very different guitars. . .
Smurfbird Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 From what I remember, the trade value of a JB Model 1 (without electronics) was about $2500, if you're lucky. Street value should be at least $3000. But we've seen people on these boards have to drop the value to $2800 or so. It's frustrating, because anyone who plays a JB knows it's worth 4K used, easy. I traded my JB and got about 3K in trade (which is what I paid), but I had to let it go since my hands are too small for it. (I also struggle with many 1.75 and prefer 1-11/16 or smaller, so, rest assured most people will find the JB VERY comfortable). Good luck if you decide to trade.
62burst Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Always nice to have a heads up on one that sounds especially good. Thanks to hanging around this forum, I too, was "just looking" today at this TV currently (still?) on eBay: Just looking, you know. But Wildwood's photo gets the red out:
EuroAussie Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 You currently have three Gibson slopes and a jumbo. It would make senseto drop one of the slopes and replace it with a Gibson square, and the HB TV would be the ideal model. They are indeed great guitars, and incredibly distinct.
E-minor7 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 They are indeed great guitars, and incredibly distinct. 'Xactly - 'Distinct' can mean something special, but also clear and precise. Let's for a while put aside the nectar, the blend between the primal core (raw in an absolutely different manner than the J-45 ditto) and the warm singing yet dusty hog-voice. Instead focus on the extremely clear and precise way the Bird shows you - allows you to hear - what you actually play, , , that be strumming, flat or fingerpicking. For that unique quality is such a thrill and if you are able to find one that both answers with this type of precision and projects from a deeper place in the box, you'll simply have a scoop of a guitar. Once aware of these virtues, you'll probably feel attached with a whole other type of bonds/ears, , , perhaps even addicted. . .
MorrisrownSal Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I haven't checked in here for a few weeks. The first post I spy is this one. Dan... WTH are you waiting for. Life is short. If I had the scratch I would just order the damn thing, have it delivered to me, babysit it for a spell, then send it to you . Damn I miss my Sheryl Crow. I bet this bird blows my old Crow away.
duluthdan Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Four words: "Not open on Sunday". Oh nuts. I would love to have the JB here so I could compare them side by side, to which one is more fun to play. I do like the idea of a new inspiration in the stable, but my rule is a limit of five, and I think I'd have a crazy hard time deciding what may go, they are all different and fulfill their roles quite well. Drats.
music4love Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 This could very easily turn into a "The One That Got Away" story. My Hummigbird TV is the best guitar that I have ever owned. While that store is closed today, I would be spending today playing and deciding if the J-45 TV or the Southern Jumbo were going to be replaced. I would also make sure to be the first phone call Wildwood receives come monday morning.

The other one was perfect. And at this price they should ALL be perfect in that respect. Wait till you find a perfect one. They are rare, but CAN be found. Good luck.

Sal, Welcome back! Things have settled down here on the forum since a few weeks ago.... I hope you'll favor us with your songs once again. FMA
father_of_pearl Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Dan, I guess you played the second TV Bird that jab described as « brighter/tighter » sounding in another thread last week. Interesting how everyone’s experience is different about a same guitar. I’d agree with music4love, if 5 is your limit, you’ve already got 2 slopes (the JB being apart). A square shoulder short scale would be a nice addition. I love my 2012 HBTV, it’s my best Gibson. Had to own 2 other HBTVs before I found THE right one. So if this one sounds great to you, don't let it fly away…

Drats. The old "Waiting at the shop til they open Monday morning and not look too keen dilemma"!!!!! I really like the Dark Cherry Burst - it gives it a very classy look, but Wildwood pics are often a bit dark. BluesKing777.

DDan, you need to think of it not as a rule - but more of a guideline. Or, re-write it to be more specific: 2 Slopes, 2 Squares and 1 Discretionary. Seriously, you do need to consider broader variety as a criteria, and not be focused on variations of the same style. Not as poetic as EM7, I can suggest a metaphor however. Would you have 5 pickup trucks (a Silverado, a Sierra, an F150, and F250 and a Ram) and not have a Corvette? And ignore the random, non- Corvette owner who protests too loudly that the 'vette's leather seats are bookmoarked imperfectly. Ny HBTV continues, after 3 years to sound better. I would not shy away from any of these because they don't meet your expectations out of the box. A significant part of their creation is manual and that allows small differences. As the French say "Viva la difference" (SP?) But, you know all this. So... what say you on this cool, clear bright Spring Morning?
duluthdan Posted April 28, 2014 Author Posted April 28, 2014 I am a happy hack guitar player. 5 is my limit, arguably 4 too many. I am heading towards home today and will agonize over potential decisions for the next few days. Headed back this direction late next week, and may have a candidate in tow to play and compare. The top seam appearance does not wig me out, never noticed it in person, and the sound really grabbed me, I think it's a fine example. I'll bring my inspection mirror, if it has the bridge plate hole issue I will walk. The action on my campfire guitar is coming up, probably a candidate for a neck set, but on a $99 guitar that would be just dumb. Maybe I'll relegate the J45 to beater status, opening up a slot in the 5 limit stable. A J45TV beater. I sound desperately lost, eh? All of the "slopes" I have are different. The J45TV is what you'd expect, the SJ has the wider Luthiers Choice neck and advanced 30's bracing, giving it a fuller round sound, and it's got the Trance Mono PU in it, making it a fine, albeit rare, gig guitar. The JB is a 12 fret withe the Trance Stereo, and a truly marvelous sound and nice wide spacing. The J200 can't go anywhere, just can't. Maybe I need to add the Martin 37 D18A into the option list, but that would seem just nuts. Maybe I should just slap a Hummingbird guard on the Martin...

Dan, just keep the Jackson Browne .All of the gibsons have that hole in the bridgeplate . I Assume you mean that you will walk if the hole is ill placed ? Above is the underside of a random gibson the brideplate hole appears to be placed away from the holes in the brige which is how all of them should be but that's not always the case Good Luck JC
EuroAussie Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Dan, get the damn HB TV .... look how well it goes with a Cowboy hat !
duluthdan Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 The HB TV at Wildwood is gone from their website. Anybody here acquire it? Nice nice guitar. Now I can stop fretting over it. Took pictures of the JB and was struggling in my mind over its potential sale. It was supposed to be a Hummingbird when I bought it, so it was the likely "off-load" candidate. EA - nice hat. Around here we call that a "Straw" - primarily for those hot summer days. Oh, and nice bird too.
E-minor7 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Visited Wildwood Guitars in Colorado today. . You went to the river ~ it wasn't time to cross. .
