Slash Is God Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Hi guys, I recently sold my Gibson Les Paul Studio pickups to someone, which I thought were the 490/498 combination, but he seemed convinced that they weren't those ones at all. He said, that due to the fact that the wires were only 2 conductor and not 4, then they were different pickups. Is there any way to find out which pickups I have? I can't remember the exact year I bought the guitar originally - and no longer have it - but I think it must have been 2001-2003. Any way to find out?

My guess is that they were indeed 490/498, I have these pick ups in my LPC and they are 2 wire not 4.
uncle mud Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I agree. I have an '05 studio with 490R and 498T pick ups. I believe most all studios, with the exception of the "lite" model, from about '91 until they started using push-pull pots, were equipped with 490R and 498T pick ups in the 2 wire configuration.

You're right. Factory installed humbuckers have 2-conductor wiring unless the model comes with push/pull pots.
Slash Is God Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 You're right. Factory installed humbuckers have 2-conductor wiring unless the model comes with push/pull pots. Ahh right, that's why. So its the ones that you buy separately that have the 4-conductor cable! That makes sense now. Thanks for all your help guys!
Pesh Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I agree. I have an '05 studio with 490R and 498T pick ups. I believe most all studios, with the exception of the "lite" model, from about '91 until they started using push-pull pots, were equipped with 490R and 498T pick ups in the 2 wire configuration. That's about right; the 2014 Studio went with a different combination, so in place of the previous "hot alnico" 498T there's a "modern classic" 490T, with the same 490R in the neck.
