benefits of lubing nut and saddles

I've recently tried the use of "big bends" nut sauce when re-stringing my lp standard. I had heard that joe bonnamasa is a loyal user.

although I am not swayed by endorsements or prone to "hero worship", I noticed that a new stringing was taking far too long to settle

in, even with a proper stretching. binding in the nut or saddle is something that it often paid little attention. of course there are claims

of graphite, pencil lead, chapstick, or any combination of these. whatever way you choose to go, I would think many peoples tuning

issues might be solved. I know it's a little thing, but hell, I need all the help I can get. tuning seems to be more stable, smoother pitch

increase when turning the pegs and ability to stay in tune over periods of non play. bottom line is, I'm doing more "playing" my guitar,

than my "OCD", had me "tuning" my guitar.

i make my own nut sauce. i break the point of a pencil and crush it on a plate with the back of a spoon. then i add a little vaseline, and stir. keeps me from binding. i do it every string change

Nothing to do with "Comfort Whilst Horse-riding", then? That's a relief. As it were...

Simply shaving some soft variety of pencil-lead (graphite), such as 2B, into the nut-slots has worked for me perfectly well in the past.

I've never had any issues afterwards but if this isn't enough kuma's suggestion of making a paste with this and a bit of Vaseline sounds excellent.

HA!

Phillip, what a pip! (perhaps that's why your handle is Pippy!)

Anyway, I also use Big Bends.. it definitely helps. some years ago.. a store I used to frequent had this stuff in an orange squeeze tube.. it was called MAGIC LUBE...

Flat out was THE best nut/saddle lube ever. more liquid form than paste like big bends.

I should have bought out the supply when I was there. The EPA must have caught wind of this stuff and shut it down.

but yea, I am a big fan of Big Bends nut sauce. I used it all the time. (infact I am in need of a restock.. where is my tube of magic lube when I really need it?)

I've done both (nut sauce and Vaseline/pencil graphite). Nut sauce is easier than shaving pencils.
