Jimi Mac Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 While I'd like a single pup axe for slide work... An' this one sure is purdy... I can't help but think to myself that for $4,599 it's missin' a few accoutrements... And I'm the guy that gives the nod to Gibson for higher priced axes and says it's the American dream... I must say it is rather striking though... Or if you like color better there's this one too: But that one will set you back $5,499...
deeman Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 it looks naked without the neck pup. I do like the binding on the white one though.
the dog Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I do like the binding on the white one though. I agree. It looks very nice. It's a nice touch.
Jimi Mac Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 It is very intriquing to say the least... I think I'd like to try one out... FYI, my point about price was tongue in cheek for the knee-jerkers out there...
Ryan H Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If i were to get a single-pickup Les Paul (not counting Juniors) of the Humbucker persuasion, I would definitely pick this beauty... Or perhaps these two of the P90 variety... But those would have to be custom orders... -Ryan
Rabs Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 They've had one of those in my local shop for several years now... Every time I go in there I cant believe it hasn't been sold.. If I had the money id get it :) http://www.dv247.com/guitars/gibson-1957-les-paul-custom-single-pickup-ebony--79699
Dub-T-123 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you've seen it for several years you should have some major leverage on price negotiation!
Rabs Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you've seen it for several years you should have some major leverage on price negotiation! Yeah.. if I had any money.. ive been unemployed for about 2 and a half years now
crust Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I could play this one, just as badly, for 1/40th the cost http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-les-paul-junior-special-electric-guitar
Dub-T-123 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Yeah.. if I had any money.. ive been unemployed for about 2 and a half years now If you feel like comin down to California I could get you a job you'd do well at with your woodworking skills :)
Rabs Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If you feel like comin down to California I could get you a job you'd do well at with your woodworking skills :) :) Thanks for the offer man, its appreciated.. but I think immigration is out at the moment... Im gonna give my building another few months then I may have to start thinking about other options.. So you never know :)
Jimi Mac Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 I could play this one, just as badly, for 1/40th the cost http://www.musicians...electric-guitar Actually I've been quite partial to the Eastwood Airline '59 1P! And not just because Jack White plays one... I've actually been a fan of them (albeit in the 2P version) since I saw JB Hutto playing them in old footage... I want a 1 pickup axe for slide work and this one just stands-out to me... And you can find them for much less than the $879 MSRP from Eastwood. You can pick one up for like $600 on eBay or Reverb.com, maybe even less if you bide your time... I do however also like those 1P Les Pauls... And the P90 versions are quite intriguing...
Jimi Mac Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Not enough pickups, for the price...lol Oh, and that's the humor driven direction I was going with this thread...
NHTom Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 odd that some of them have stop/tom while the others have wrap around........or are they different years/models/versions? NHTom
Jimi Mac Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 odd that some of them have stop/tom while the others have wrap around........or are they different years/models/versions? NHTom I suspect the wrap tails are based upon a '54 GoldTop and a '54 Custom... The first ones that I posted are more contemporary, but I think the burst is based possibly on a '58? I did notice a very different placement of the volume and tone control knobs...

Drog Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I would dig this more if it had the single pickup in the neck position.
btoth76 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 ... ... Nothing`s missing, just placed wrong. It should be in the neck position. Bence
Jimi Mac Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Nothing`s missing, just placed wrong. It should be in the neck position. Bence While I generally prefer the neck position tone and spend the vast majority of my time playing from the neck position... For slide I can't help but prefer a 1P of this configuration, for getting those super high notes without crossing the magnetic field of the pickup with the slide for that odd void you get from the slide... Duane did and Derek seem to do it just fine with a 2P, but I just can't help but think you can get a little higher with a little less worry from the 1P in this configuration... I can't say I've ever seen Dave Hole have an issue with a 2P either (or 3P Strat) and he's just plumb crazy with a slide!
