sumner77 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Already have too many guitars, but a spruce and maple SJ-200 is whispering to me. Haven't played that many, but I have played a Pete Townsend and the True Vintage limited edition. Any of you guys really know these different models, including custom shop guitars? I'd like to get a sense if the True Vintage limited edition (retail $6,330) is the best of the bunch, or just Gibson's latest marketing idea. Thanks.
Jinder Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 it would be nice to have the Adi top as on the TV Ltd., but for bang-to-buck it is very hard to beat the off-the-shelf SJ200 MC. I have a 2003 that I have carted all over the world with me, and I wouldn't be without it-it is still my go-to guitar after seven albums, 1000+ live shows and lord knows how many road miles.
TWilson Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I have an '07 SJ-200 MC (sunburst) and I just get tickled to death every time I take it out of the case. I got it last summer and still can't believe I have this thing. It looks and sounds fantastic and is way more guitar than I deserve! There's more expensive ones but for my old ears, I don't require anything "better."
J-200 Koa Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I have played more than my share of Super Jumbo Gibsons. Maple, Indian rosewood, koa, Madagascar rosewood....even a Brazilan rosewood a few years ago.....if I can get my hands on one, I grab it. My most recent toy is koa with red spruce top. I think the red spruce has really opened my eyes in terms of tone. If you can locate any Super Jumbo with a red spruce top, you owe it to yourself to give it a whirl. It is really an upgrade over Sitka spruce imho.
zombywoof Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I have played most of the variations of the SJ-200 made in Bozeman and my favorite remains one of their first - made in 1989 or 1990. Nuttin' too fancy - just a Sitka Spruce top and a fairly plain maple back and sides (fancy looks do not equal "tonewoods"). Should have bought that one when I had the chance.
onewilyfool Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Already have too many guitars LOL!!!! That is the FIRST time I have heard those words uttered in this forum......LOL
sumner77 Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 So the conclusion seems to be play them until one jumps out. Adi top is a plus, but maybe not worth $1,000 or more? Thanks.
