rwfelton Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 i know i know. this question has been brought up 1000 times. but most posts are over 2 years old or have 5000 comments. so here is my opinion and my question. We all know strap locks are one of the most important means of protection for a guitar. i have always used the grolsh method.... until i got a les paul with the UFO/mushroom cloud strap pegs. the grolsh gaskets don't fit over these. these type of pegs work fine if you want to replace your strap about every two weeks. my SG allows the strap to stay on even when in the case when using the gaskets . the LP not so much. it fits in the case so tight that there isn't even enough room for the strap to stay on. So I am constantly taking the strap off and on causing the strap to wear out. i just ordered the dunlop strap locks but i don't want to drill into a new gibson.... i'm thinking about replacing the UFO pegs with standard pegs just so i can use the gaskets. But then again the gaskets get to be a pain if you have to take them off and on everytime you play. The real plus is that you get strap locks for two guitars and 4 beer for only $8 i was also wondering if just grinding down the outside edges of the head on the original screw would help one not have to drill into a new guitar. a screw is much cheaper and easier to replace than an entire guitar.
rwfelton Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 I use grolsch beer grommets. What do you mean they don't fit on your LP? I have stock buttons and oversized buttons on my gibbys and stock ones on Fender guitars and the beer grommets work with them all. they are just a super pain in the A double S to fit over the UFO/mushroom cloud pegs on the 2014 LPs. the case for my LP is so tight that i can't even put the axe in the case with the strap on it and it is just a 2" tweed strap. its really just the buckle on the strap that makes it difficult. as far as my 61 reissue sg, the strap and grolsh gaskets stay on all the time and use the same type strap. same with my strat. those cases just have about 1/4" more space on the insides. my main concern is drilling into the body though. i am confident in doing the job i just thought it would be safer to grind around the outside edge of the original screwhead (if the shaft of the screw will fit in the peg) than drilling into a $1000+ axe....
GDTRFB Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Do yourself a favor and just get Schaller strap locks and be done with it.
kidblast Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 ^-- what he said no drilling needed you can probably use the Gibson stock screw.
rwfelton Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 ^-- what he said no drilling needed you can probably use the Gibson stock screw. i had already ordered the dunlops by the time i had gotten any replies. no drilling needed. just a little candle wax on the screw and it went right in. and they actually keep the strap from rubbing all over the top of the LP... not too bad.
DubfromGA Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 I"ve been wondering how to best proceed with my new SG ,too. I have some of the Grolsch pieces that certainly do stretch over the factory button.....and they hold the strap on very well. They are a pain to remove every time I want to put my guitar back in the case, though. I put the Dunlop Straploks on my son's Strat and also on an ESP I used to own. They worked great, but I can't see them working on an SG (too much extension backwards from the neck base.....unfomfortable). I bought the Dunlop version because that's what they had in the local shop. I'll look around for the Schaller version.
