rwfelton Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 just a couple of weeks ago i got a 2014 studio. way different from the standard that i was used to playing on a few years back. the maple neck is the hardest thing to get used to. that and the 490s. i have and still play on an 61 reissue sg that was made in 1987. two completely different animals. i like the 57s better than the 490s. do they make a 57 coil tap pickup? the new solderless connections seem like they will make customizing fun and easy. i do have to say that the finish is much nicer than i had expected. anybody else have any opinions on the new studios?
Slartibartfarst42 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I just bought my first Les Paul and it's a Studio but I went with the 2013 model to get the mahogany neck. Overall I really love it. Normally the first thing I do with any guitar is rip out the pickups and install Bare Knuckles but I actually quite like the 498T that's in there stock. The 490R is a different matter entirely and is a really horrible pickup. Even the cleans are awful, which I didn't expect on a neck pickup with an alnico II magnet. They're just overly bright, brittle and completely without soul. That one will certainly have to go but as I say, overall the guitar is incredible.
